sun exposure

hi, does anyone have any insight or tips relating to sun exposure post open heart surgery? I had a replacement valve in the Spring and all is going well but when we venture abroad in August I know I’ll need to be careful. I will avoid sunbathing but like to swim in the sea and pool so wonder if a swim top will be a good idea. Just conscious that I don’t want the sun to impact the scar recovery. Anyone with any experience of this or suggestions? Thanks

Hi shortly after I had my operation I went to Greece for two weeks I used a stick sunblock, it left a much thicker protection over the scar than a liquid cream would have. Had no problems.

I went to Italy 5 months Post op. Purchased a high neck swimming costume from snag tights ( online) it was perfect and flattering too.

Thank you, I’m thinking a swim t shirt would be a good idea based on this.

A couple of months after my OHS I went on a cruise and carried on as normal and had no problems. Never gave it a second thought.

Thanks Rosie, I had read that I should not expose the scar to the sun for the first year but sounds like your experience was a very positive one

UH just get out in the sun keep hydrated and don't worry. Have you gone through the depression stage yet? sun helps depression. Your scar will be fine.

Thank you, no depression yet, just 5 weeks post op so fairly early days. Is a depression phase usual?
