Hi all,I started to have lots of symptoms 14months ago heart palpitations being one, wich they got a lot more frequent and frightening it would also race, always worse at night, wich then progressed to experiencing them through the day, this went on for months.I was then diagnosed with graves.I was put on 40mg of pro prananol 3 times daily. And requested a holter after I told the dr their getting worse.Months passed and finally had holter but by that time i would start to go up to 2 days with no symptoms, worried that the 24h holter wouldent catch them i pushed for a 7 day as after doing a lot of research the 7 day is much better an higher likelihood of catching them but was refused.I had already been suffering for so long and the many months wait on top for holter was just unbearable an knowing my luck I wouldn't have any symptoms, well I was right. And becouse of this I was told there is nothing wrong with my heart wich was an absolutely ridiculous thing to say as they just wasn't cought, that didn't mean I had nothing wrong,an blamed it on my anxiety, 'typical' ,i was so crushed an felt so alone but so annoyed that all along they wernt taken me seriesly.Having an overactive thyroid can couse forms of arrhythmia.I made another appointment and pushed and stood my ground but they only requested a 72h monitor so my concern is they won't be cought again and il have to wait many more months again.Anyway i started to have pulsation type feeling under jaw the side of neck and front of neck, wich has been going on for months. Now for the last 2 weeks when i have been shutting my eyes to go to sleep somthings happening to my heart, its like a nervous shock type feeling that makes me open my eyes an gasp, that feeling you get in your chest when someone frightens you? It happens over an over everytime I close my eyes its horrible an so frightening and then I just fall asleep it can go on for hours .This is not the same as feeling like your falling off a cliff an your body jumps this is somthing else.I also feel my heart pumping harder when i lay down to sleep somtimes also.

I had the same, but I was told any heart pain go to a&e, I was initially admitted with AF but after scans etc they found a large hole in my heart- you need to get monitoring when your heart goes funny,I also have a Kardia which can record your heart and you'd be able to show doctors

Please do not give up hope. I have palpitations everyday every day several times a day. Yes they are very annoying and frightening but I was told it not dangerous. I also have a fast heart rate. In 2019 I was diagnosed with sinus tachycardia after having a 7 day holter. Anything less than that didnt quite catch them as you say. I also had an echo, an mri and a treadmill stress test. Keep pushing. I wish you luck

We also had to wait 6 months for a Holter monitor so that is not going to be an immediate tool to pick up problems. With new symptoms certainly tell GP or cardiac department or go to A&E. We use the on-line system to tell our GP new symptoms, this way it gets onto the system at the time it starts and the doctor can see the picture that is building up over time.

Ectopic beats are harmless which is why your doctor is unconcerned. If you had a high burden of ventricular ectopics, these may lead to issues, but they would show on a 24 hr holter or you would see other issues on things like an echo. Ectopics beats are definitely made worse and or brought on by anxiety so don’t write off that diagnoses too easily. Other things can also bring them on such as caffeine, dehydration and even exercise. Ectopic beats are very common. Eat well, exercise and reduce stress to help avoid them.

I am sorry to hear that you are having these problems - it is so hard when our experience and concerns are dismissed by the people we want to help us

I wonder how recently you had a review of your thyroid condition? your medication might need to be fine -tuned to help reduce effects on your heart - thyroid issue have a significant effect on the heart and all metabolic processes, it is important to get this under control to prevent complication and long-term consequences

irregular heart rhythms can be very worrying - while you try to get the right attention for yours you could try looking up Dr Sanjay Patel's YouTube videos on palpitations and arrhythmias - he offers clear explanations and some helpful suggestions about coping with them

also you could keep a diary recording when you get palpitations, how long they last, pulse rate and how long it takes to settle, wht you are doing at the time, physical effects on you , what helps/makes them worse - this will provide some evidence for the medics, help you identify any pattern and maybe help you feel you are doing something useful in monitoring your condition

I hope you get what you need soon

Caffeine in tea and coffee can bring on palpitations ( plus alcohol of course ) but it sounds like your irregular heart beat might be connected to your thyroid problem if that's what you've been diagnosed with . Recently I waited 10 months for a holter monitor and like you nothing showed up during the 24 hour period although l was diagnosed with AF years ago and have been on tablets since then .

Hi lots of people get heart flutter`s ( palpitations ), some people notice it ( I do ) others do not.

Most of the time it happens in the evenings when it is quite. My consultant cardiologist is going to have me wired up on a treadmill again to see the results. Perhaps get Your GP to refer You for this test. Good luck

I have Graves, 10 years in, and in remission.

U say you have been diagnosed with Graves. Aside from propranolol, were you given any other medication?

Your heart symptoms sound like your Graves is not under control.

The priority right now is to get the thyroid under control. That would definitely take care of your heart symptoms.

I am referring you to the Healthunlocked Thyroid website -

healthunlocked.com/thyroiduk

Please ask for advice and help there.

Don't wait too long to do it, you don't want the Graves to cause some real damage to your heart.

Best wishes.
