Genetics alone can mean a 21% greater risk of early death. But today the Guardian reports on a paper suggesting a healthy lifestyle could offset effects of life-shortening genes by 62% and add as much as five years to your life. The results were published in the journal BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine.

I went for my yearly echocardiogram a couple of weeks ago and my mitral regurgitation has gone back from moderate to mild/moderate. When I asked the cardiologist how can that be, he told me what you have posted - that environmental factors can influence it by 60%. Needless to say I am keeping up my increased exercise routine, breathing exercises, healthy eating etc. For me, quality of life is more important than quantity, although I do want to chalk up a reasonable innings! The changes I have made make me feel better too. In my view, the effort is definitely worth putting in.
