My mum has recently been in hospital following a simple ablation procedure, however afterwards she started getting 'flutters' that she did not know were happening, her heart rate was all over the place going up to 200bpm. She has been advised that she now needs a 'complex ablation' or as she 72 she can opt for a pacemaker. The Consultant wants her to consider the complex ablation in the first instance as this gives a good chance of success and if this is the case she would not need to go for the pacemaker and should return to a 'normal' lifestyle, which is the main thing as since this all started her quality of life has deteriorated from being relatively fit and healthy to a less active lifestyle. Does anyone have any advice or experience that may help us make the right decision?? Initially the problem started as AF but now AF on one side of heart with macroreentrant tachycardia. Any advice or help gratefully received....thanks

I have had 4 ablations, I have had both types of ablations, I don’t know what a complex one is, my last ablation lasted 4 hours.
Unfortunately none of them worked this went on for 4 years. I had a bi-ventricular pacemaker fitted this June I still have some problems but the Bradycardia has been eliminated with the pacemaker it kicks in when the beat is to slow or when my heart pauses
Your mother should ask what the pacemaker is for exactly think this is important to know
Having a pacemaker could be the right thing, you get used to having it quite quickly after a few months.
I am not saying an ablation won’t work for your Mother as it works for many people I was just unlucky as you can see as I tried 4 times
I too had an an ablation in January this year it made me worse with my heart going in and out of normal rhythm. I was treated for svt they got that but caused another problem which I never had before I am now having a complex ablation october 18 I got the impression by complex it was a more complicated procedure requiring more than one consultant. Hope all goes well it’s horrible not knowing I too want to get back to living a normal-ish life without the constant worry and symptoms.
That is pretty much what has happened with my Mum she was being treated for AF but now come out with her heart rate being all over the place - I am hoping that this procedure will help to improve things! Thanks for your reply.
Bless her I feel for her I really do I have two young children 3 & 7 and it’s difficult it’s just the not knowing if things will go back to the way they were & im gutted that I’m worse than before the ablation I think that knoecked my anxiety and got me down more. I was ok with the maybe not being able to fix the svt but wasn’t made aware that there would be a chance of developing other things worse wrong with your heart. I wish your mum all the best.
