I have been put on Metolazone (Xaqua). I just wondered if anyone else have tried it and how they got on.

Hi, my Dad was prescribed Metolazone last summer, as has end stage heart failure and severe odema in his legs up to his knees. Not all Cardiologists are able to prescribe this and we had to jump through multiple hoops before we were able to finally collect the prescription. (Drug company requested written info from the Consultant on 2 separate occasions, before they wld supply the medication). The Nurses at the Heart Failure Clinic aren’t able to prescribe this - so it is fairly potent.

Our Dad was told to take it for 3 days, for 2 consecutive weeks - which he did, then had a blood test on the day after he stopped taking it. Whilst it did an amazing job of reducing the fluid - it also reduced his potassium to very low levels, so he wasn’t able to continue with it. So something to be aware of.

Hope you get on ok with it.

Just a thought but what was the side effects like?

Hiya,

Because my Dad was only taking the medication for 6 days, it wld be difficult to comment on side effects - other than his potassium levels plummeted (to the extent he ended up in hospital for 4 days on i.v potassium). Apparently, this is quite a rare reaction but something to be aware of.

I obviously don’t know your particular medical issues but, my Dad is in his eighties, palliative with end stage heart failure, very frail and sadly has multiple ailments. I’m sure everyone reacts differently and my Dad was also on other medication at the time.

Knowing what we do now re how effective Metolazone is, I think close and careful monitoring wld be key. Hopefully, you’ll tolerate it without any issues.

I have now been on Metolazone for 6 days. So far no side effects but I have yet to have my blood tested.

Hi. I know it’s early days but can you tell me about your experience taking metolazone. My mum has just been prescribed this along with butemanide as she has a lot of fluid to shift. Thanks

For me (and everyone is different), I have found it a life saver.

I take 5mg of Metolazone every 2 days and 6mg of Bumetanide daily. I lose about 1 - 1.2 kg of fluid daily.

Its been 10 days now and I'm still losing fluid. No side effects.

Good luck with it and let me know how you get on.

Mum has been prescribed 2.5 mg every day and 8mg bumetanide daily. Not sure if it’s helping much yet.
