beta blocker. Coming off them

Hello friends

I was diagnosed with tachycardia after ending up in the emergency room with a very elevated heart rate I was given a referral to a cardiologist. They did a heart monitor and it did detect some SVT. However, I was then sent to a different cardiologist more experienced.

I was placed on a low-dose of carvedilol started with 3.25 two times per day Then two months later, 6.25 twice a day. This was prescribed for situational tachycardia/HTN. My blood pressure is only high when I go to medical appointments and fairly normal at home the Carvedilol has lessened tachycardia however the side effects have been difficult. Prior to this medication, they tried to others that were worse than I was unable to tolerate initially I was able to tolerate this one particular medication I’m currently on, but as time went by the side effects have piled up. I see my cardiologist in the fall (September) because I really want to come off this medication however on frightened to pieces that now that I was placed on it if I’m taking off something more drastic could happen. I was also sent to a heart rhythm specialist who didn’t even think I had that big of a problem. She thought. My thyroid was causing the tachycardia, but my thyroid is not causing it. I was consulted by an endocrinologist and everything is fine other than it being enlarged. However, I cannot have it removed. I cannot clear surgery due to having progressive multiple sclerosis. However, my endocrinologist is OK with me keeping my thyroid provided. It doesn’t bother me and she does monitor my numbers closely, which have all been normal.

I have also had two echocardiogram over the last 2 years and they were perfectly fine

EKGs are fine too

Is there truly a safe way to come off it? I wish I never agreed to it. However, I was scared because of the tachycardia event I had that put me in the emergency room at the time.

there are times I have these little spikes and blood pressure and heart rate and I’m told to take an extra tablet of my heart medicine to calm it down, but I really don’t wanna keep taking this stuff I’ve already been given something for anxiety and I feel that that will be enough and don’t want to take these beta blockers any longer I believe they are making me sick

I just really don’t want to be on a beta blocker this long. I fear coming off of it because of everything I’ve heard has really given me so much anxiety I’ve been told by people that you can have a heart attack if you come off this medication

I think I may send a message to my cardiologist, but I wondered if anyone has ever safely come off of beta blockers after two years?

Thank you for any opinion you can share Awesome thank you for all the information you provide to everyone. ♥️🙏🏻

I doubt if anyone on this forum would have the same combination of medical history and medication as you, and anything that we say might be totally inappropriate and possibly harmful to you.

All I can say is that you have my sympathies and best wishes.

Please check in with your doctor. I live with supraventricular tachycardia and have for decades. I briefly took diltiazam prescribed by the cardiologist which slowed me down too much. I couldn’t function normally because my blood pressure runs very low without medication. He didn’t mind that I chose to stop. By the way, he is the top cardiologist at a local city hospital, a region known world wide for its excellent medical care .

Occasionally, I have worn a ZIO patch to record ALL my heart activity over an extended period of time. It can be worn up to14 days. It records my irregular beats, but that is my normal, so I do not worry about it and neither does the cardiologist. Once the patch is put on in the cardiologist’s office, you just go about your life and then mail it whenever the time is up. I think the Zio patch could be helpful and convenient for you.

Perhaps, your situation should be revisited. The medicine that reduces your blood pressure could be making you feel pretty exhausted. I understand. Blood pressure medicine is often used to treat supraventricular tachycardia, but may not be the best choice for everyone.

It appears your beta blocker was prescribed specifically for your irregular heart beats, and “not” due to any high blood pressure. If it were prescribed for high blood pressure, then you need to continue to treat that condition.

Hope this helps. Let me know. I think this is a good forum for you. Supraventricular tachycardia is generally considered benign, unlike Afib.

After you sort yourself out, please post.

Best,

thank you so much Leaf for your response I sincerely appreciate your thoughts and support 😀

I’ve done the Zio patch before. Nothing concerning was picked up so I guess that’s a good thing. My neighbor next to me in the next house suffers from a fib, which is like you said completely different. No one ever told me that SVT for the most part is benign. I’m going to bring that up to my cardiologist.

I really want off this medicine. It’s just making me feel awful.
