Hi - good for me to see this for comparison. I am now 13 months post triple CABG and HR similar when working out. Always so worried about it going too high. Well done.

The reason I posted this was to help others. Last Monday I was all set up to go back outdoors but my anxiety kicked in about the blood thinners and falling off the bike.

I don't have anxiety about my operation or the bypass or even taken my heart rate above the maximum recommended rate, today I was at 105%.

I have anxiety around my job etc and I am going to see my GP about work related stress.

It's OK not to be ok......

Nice work Dave , the physical stuff seems to going well 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻. I hope you get the anxiety element under control , you’ll be flying . I don’t (knowingly) have anxiety but I look back at the stressful few years during lockdown on top of living in a caravan on our farm, alongside working iim law enforcement, managing my team , looking after my 80+ year old parents 🤦🏼. Even though I was fit and strong , I must have been like a fizzy bottle waiting to go pop.

I also push my heart rate up now , had it in the 180s , no side effects . Rests at 48 -53 now . Looking at my 3 bikes and turbo trainer … might swap my running shoes back to cleats and clip in for the summer 🤣. Used to ride with a club . The rides and training were taking up too much time , plus it was bloody tough and left me knackered . A more sedate approach and cycling for enjoyment is on the cards . 👍🏻

Looking great DWizza, I have decided to wait till I am off the clopidogrel before venturing outdoors.I spoke to my Cardiac nurse and she said its best to take care although she did mention that I could go outdoors but to take it carefully for the next 3 months. I will be 9 months post CABG on July 28.

Indoor cycling is just as good and I burn similar output when I compare indoor to outdoors. So outdoors not worth the risk with cuts etc.

Bang on point Dave 👍🏻. I’m 9 months post surgery on the 25th April. I’m also looking forward to droopy clopidogrel, hopefully on the 12 month mark. I’m on lowest dose Bisoprolol 1.25 and half a 1.25 if Ramipril 🤷.. just trying a 3rd statin at low dose , 10mg Rosuvastatin and seeing how I respond to that with a view of titrating dose up to a pint where I tolerate it without side effects. Bit of a game with the meds 🤣🤣. We keep on doing our part though 👊🏻👊🏻🤦🏼

Question regarding your chest scar is it sill pinkish?

DWizza profile image
DWizza in reply to davebal67

Yes and my sternum still aches after yoga planks and glowing sun salutations . I needed help today to get tractor wheel nuts loosened, could feel it was putting a lot of stress/pressure on my chest/sternum.

Great stuff I do something very similar as well, I would maybe just watch the max heart rate. Using the measure they often quote yours should be around 163, I appreciate that isn't a 100% accurate measure but thought it worth mentioning.

The way they work it out is 220 minus your age.

I’m on beta blockers which slows HR down so does 220 - age still apply

I couldn't comment on that, one to check with the doctors.

I was on those pills for a short while post operation but with doctors approval I dropped it as it wasn't needed. My normal average resting heart rate is 43 so dropping it further caused me dizziness when standing up.

blimey, you are doing well. I’m 3xCABG +4 months. Completed my cardiac rehab. I feel I could push myself a lot more but don’t want to go too far. My HR reaches 115 which is what they told me was max at rehab. I do 4.5km walk every day so a as my advice on increasing exercise, going back on weights, carrying out core exercises, yoga would be greatly appreciated

Once I went for my three months review with the consultant which was 100% okay with no issues I asked him about how hard I could push my heart rate.He said as hard as I like as there wasn't anything wrong with my heart it was only the blockages that were an issue and they have been removed.

So I would just gradually increase it, must admit I always wear a heart rate monitor when exercising now though 🙂

Hi Dave..wow that's very good HR ..as Nelsons post the cardiac nurses set my max HR at 115 at the beginning of my rehab ..and mentioned at the end of rehab that that will be my max HR for life ! ..I get very confused by the differences in max HR that may be safely achievable ? In my case 8 months post cabgx4 ...220- my age = 155 BPM max ? But still on 1.25 mg daily Bisoprolol beta blocker ..any sound advice please all ?

That method of maximum heart rate measure is the generally accepted marker which is 220 minus your age, making mine 145. I never go above 135 as I don't think it's worth the risk as I am not a professional athlete and can't see the point frankly! It is not an exact science but is a good yardstick.

Everyone is uniquely different that's why I wouldn't criticise anyones approach over another approach. Same as I wouldn't criticise what people eat or drink. I have been to Cardiac Rehab 3 and 4. These were at different centres and I was the fittest there and the total count of participants was around 40. I have bradycardia and always had it since I was a kid.

After my cabg operation my T wave was inverted and I walked for 10 weeks. As soon as I started back on my bike all my ECG returned to prep values (week 11 onwards).

Taking your heart rate to maximum during excercise will not do it any damage assuming you do not have any underlying conditions. I totally understand why people want to be cautious.

When I was waiting for my bypass I did not take it above 120bpm. Today I was back on the Peloton and never took it into the red zone.

I stopped bisoporal due to side effects(cold hands and feet) as my resting heart rate was good under doctors orders. I have also stopped amlodopine and my BP now is 120/83. Last year my bp was 190/105.

hi Dave

Many thanks for your post. I’m 4 months post cath ablation and keen to get back to running. When I do go running, I am sometimes in red zone without even knowing it until later when I see the data. Not taking my HR up past my limit of 220 - my age just doesn’t seem easy and I always feel comfortable when I am jogging, even when I am pushing my HR up.

You have given me some confidence thanks!

Hi. Also on the peloton. Followed you. I’m zena123 🤣. I had heart attack December. Now got 1 stent. I’m finding I’m a lot slower but I am on 2.5 Bisoprolol.

I'm approaching five years beyond my CABG. I went with Zwift in Covid, and still use it at least weekly. The consultant who discharged me wasn't concerned about my pushing my heart rate, but I've never got within about 15bpm of theoretical age maximum. That seems to be just me - I'm a life-long club cyclist, but I've always been rubbish on hills, and I don't seem to be able to do the peaks of effort needed to get up them. So I just go steady all the time, however much I try. I suspect that was true just as much before my bypass.

I was taken off beta blockers after a syncope a year ago. It happened again four months later, so I'm on a loop monitor, but nothing since. So again it looks hereditary to me - just a naturally-low heart rate. But what do I know?
