update on girlfriend pacemaker issues

hi everyone, thankyou to all who commented and showed support to my post the other day. Thanks to your comments, we found the issue and she is no longer in pain (except for the incision), we’re so close to getting her out now, but she is having issues with heart rate, they’ve done multiple correction surgeries and everything is placed correctly and multiple X-rays show that. Does anyone know of ways to lower the heart rate, currently it’s between 110-120, we need to be at a 70/80 in order to get her home.

normally the pacemaker would kick in at a predetermined HR. Mine was set at 60 bpm and will kick in when it falls below that. Pacemakers only stop the slow HR and not the high HR.

Such good news to hear her pain has improved and she could me home soon. Hopefully others with pacemakers will reply soon, I just wanted to wish you both well.

Hi HHH, thankyou a lot! I did some research into something called pacemaker-mediated tachycardia (pmt), and asked the cardiologist it they’re able to look for it! Which they are today, and they believe it to be that.

When I had my pacemaker I started having high blood pressure and was put on tablets. I would have thought there will be tablets to bring her heart rate down. I should be asking the doctors what they can do to control it.. Brian

My pacemaker is set at 55, so it can't go any lower than that, but pacemakers are unable to lower heart rates. My HR was about 100 bpm the day after my PM was fitted, but they were not concerned about it, and they let me go home anyway. A few days later, it was back to a normal 70/80. Apparently, a HR of 100/120 is not dangerous, and it can easily be this high with just a small amount of exercise, or if you are feeling anxious or stressed.

I'm sure your girlfriend will be fine, but the staff in the hospital will look after her, and give any treatment they feel necessary.

Hi to everyone who commented, I hope you can see this. In the past week, she’s underwent 3 correction surgeries and a replacement pacemaker due to the original being faulty. Due to this, she’s developed PMT, which is a rare malfunction in the pacemaker I believe. She’s just undergone the diagnostic tests and we’re waiting to hear feedback from the doctors. Thank you all for your lovely and kind messages and support and helpful responses. Really glad to have found a space where we can ask questions about our worries, she is only 19 so a lot of things are scary to us because of how young we are. You are all kind people with beautiful souls. Thankyou.

My pacemaker was originally set at 50bpm but recently I've had two more lead wires implanted and it now runs at 80bpm. I thought pacemakers were made to kick in if your heart fails to beat enough. I had pain from my pacemaker initially because the box had slipped under my skin, that was very unpleasant indeed but I'm ok now. I became ill at 15 with heart health issues and have had 3 major surgeries plus the pacemaker implantation so I do understand how scarry it can be for someone of your girlfriend's age. All I can say is keep questioning and push for answers Take care and I wish your girlfriend good health for her future.
