Flying tips

My Husband had a heart attack 5 years ago, when it happened it was a few days after a flight home from holiday. He had really swollen ankles which we mistakenly assumes was to do with a reaction to mosquito bites.Since then he has flown once to Scotland which take off left him feeling quite light headed, but was otherwise fine.

We now have a holiday booked for the Canary Islands, I will ask him to speak to his Dr first but just wondered if anyone had any tips? And should we get some flight socks to help with any swelling?

He also gets painful ears so will also be wearing ear planes to see if that helps with the pressure in his ears.

Appreciate some of it may be psychological and not just physical.

Thank you

Hi banana1982I usually get swollen ankles after a flight home. Possibly due to increased salt in food while away. Ask GP about using something like ferusomide, if not already on it, or varying the dose. I normally use flight socks, but a bit tricky if travelling home in shorts and flip flops!

Enjoy the Canaries 😎

The Canarian potatoes are very salty - but delicious. My Husband has no shame so will have no issue with socks and Sandals 🤣

Get the socks. Go for an aisle seat, or better one with extended leg room, so he can get up and move about frequently. Nearly 4 hours jammed in an aircraft seat is not a good thing. Find out about how to safely pop your ears as the aircraft ascends to and descends from its cruising height. I usually just gently blow with my mouth closed and my nose pinched to pop my ears, but there are other methods

Thank you, he's tried allsorts with his ears, but still complains about his ears, he hasn't flown a huge amount so I tell him he'll grow out of it just like I did 😀

Will definitely get the socks to keep his mind at rest if nothing else

four hours to Canaries is fine. There are leg exercises you can do about every 45 mins to keep the blood moving. Stand up and stretch as well is always good for anyone but belt and braces wear flight socks but I only put them on for long haul

I have a problem with pressure in ears when I fly. It only developed a couple of years ago when I went to the Canaries. It was so horrible that I wondered about flying again. I was deaf when we landed and then about an hour later I heard what I thought was a gunshot, but it was in my head! It was as bad coming home and I struggled through passport control because I couldn’t hear properly. Next time I tried the special earplugs without much hope of improvement but they worked 100%. I got some from Boots which were a bit cheaper than the branded ones.
