I should feel sad but I’m not

My husband and I will be attending the funeral of our friend today. We’ve known him for almost 40 years, the last 11 of which he has been ill. We’ve holidayed all over the world with him and his wife and had some great times and adventures. The last holiday we had was in May. I’m not sad because the sun is shining and he loves the sun. I’m not going to think of it as a funeral but as a chance to say “Bon voyage” to a mate who I’m sure will be sunbathing on a beach somewhere.

I’m glad that you can go feeling that you had the best of times with them and have happy memories.

My father died two years ago and whilst feeling a certain sadness, I also felt glad for him that he was released from being so old, frail and decrepit. He had had a good life but it was time for him to stop battling on as he had been for the last 5 or more years. Life is for living but when that got too hard and it was a painful existence, then it was unfair of me to will him to keep going so that I didn’t feel the pain of the end of that era for me.

A lovely sunny day today, to remember a good life.

I am glad you are going to remember them with such positive thoughts and memories of your holidays together. We have to enjoy life while we are well enough. Its just really difficult for the partner left behind. I had a really good friend who passed within a month of diagnosis and his wife is really struggling to come to terms with her loss after 30 years together. Hope you enjoy your weekend and your memories. Brian

I hope the service went well & you all supported eachother in saying your farewells and reminisced with lovely stories of your wonderful travel memories. Another journey starts now for his partner & yourself, good luck x

I hope the service went well Maisie & that's a lovely way to think of your friend, though of course you'll miss him massively. I'm a great believer in after life, I know that one day I'll meet again with the people I've loved and lost. Your wonderful memories will hopefully sustain you till that day X

I love your attitude Maisie2014, and I hope that when it`s my turn my mourners feel the same way that you do. Your friend is on another adventure and I also believe in the afterlife and have no doubt that you will meet again one day. Best wishes Marianne. x

Hi, Maisie2014,

I am sorry for your loss of a long-time friend. That has to be devastating in so many ways; however, I love your view of appreciating the time and adventures that you all shared. It does give some comfort in imagining him doing something that he enjoyed in a different place/existence.

Best wishes to you and your husband. 😊🙏
