I am in permanent AF and take Bisoprolol. For a few weeks the tops of my feet have been swollen. In the past I have suffered with swollen ankles which would go down overnight, but the swelling on top of my feet doesn't seem to change. I have also started to get cramp in my calves at night. I have read somewhere that Bisoprolol can cause swelling of the feet and wondered if anyone has had a similar issues. I am also on Apixaban, Candesartan and Atorvastatin

Swollen feet
Hiya,
Not much help - but my Dad is also in permanent A.F, on Bisoprolol and also has permanently swollen feet / ankles / legs and suffers with cramp. (Especially at night).
He sadly has end stage heart failure now too. He’s tried the entire range of diuretics and whilst we wld notice a reduction of fluid in his legs initially - his ankles and feet always remain stubbornly swollen.
It’s interesting what you say about Bisoprolol (I take that too). We’re off to see the Heart Failure Nurses today - so I’ll ask them about it. I wonder if there is a different alternative to Bisoprolol that cld be tried?
If I find out anything I’ll let you know! I hope you get some answers.
Hi Vrouse,
I asked my Dad’s H.F Nurse this afternoon if Bisoprolol wld be exacerbating his odema l, but she said not. So back to the drawing board. I hope your G.P can offer some answers.
other than what has been said - lots of things can cause swollen ankles. If you are concerned it’s best to get this checked out I feel
Diuretics may help to get rid of the fluid in your feet.I take them with caution and resist GPs insistence on increasing the dosage unless i know exactly why. I regularly take 2.5mg of Amlopodien and 20 mg of fluroxide in the morning. The Amplop. is the smallest dose but this dose seems to keep my heart free from a build up of fluid and keeps at bay any fluid inclined to accumulate in my lungs. My dise was set by Cardiac. nurse. at hospital.
There could be so many reasons for this , and not just ones connected to the medication so you really need to ring your GP and make an appointment to have them checked. If they only offer a call back or telephone appointment at first , take it , they are usually quicker and when the GP speaks to you they usually ask you to come in to be checked within 48 hours anyway.
In the meantime , try and keep your feet up while you sit and have a little stroll each hour or rotate your feet and ankles, in case it's circulation or water retention as this can often help.
Also try raising the base of the bed or resting your feet and ankles on a firm pillow at night to help circulation while you sleep.
Increase your fluid intake if it's below daily recommendation as internal dehydration or salt imbalance can often be the cause swollen feet and ankles and the water helps to improve blood flow, removal of toxins and retained water and reduce inflammation.
Hopefully these tips will help but you will still need to be examined by the GP to get the cause diagnosed and treated .
Take care , Bee
I’m on Bisoprolol 10mg and pravastatin haven’t experienced feet swelling , but have had cramps . Was suggested tonic . Elderflower tonic is nice .
