Abnormal ECG Myocarditis

Hi everyone,

I’ve had myocarditis for over a month now. I’ve had a few electrocardiogram tests done and the results have all been irregular. I had another test today and hoped I might see an improvement, but no change. For people who have experience with myocarditis, is an irregular ECG common with Myocarditis? Any help would be much appreciated.

yes while I had myo my ecg was irregular, the t wave inverted due to the heart event I had and the inflammation. As I recovered my t wave began to repolarise , though due to damage my ecg isn’t normal but is the normal for me now

Hi, this is quite normal from my experience, especially so early in your recovery. Your heart is still recovering ❤️‍🩹 and so is likely to still be struggling hence the need for LOTS of rest.

Im 6.5yrs post myocarditis & pericarditis and have my yearly scan today.

Do rest lots, TRY not to worry and kerp that heart rate down during the next 6months giving your heart every opportunity to make a full recovery. 💪🏽

It may not be relevant if your myocarditis resolves, but my cousin had myocarditis which persisted and seemingly nothing could be done. In the end he went and got treatment in Switzerland which identified that he had a reservoir of Coxsackie B virus in some dental caries. Once he had that sorted out the myocarditis resolved. Nobody here thought about the possibility, but the Swiss doctors were straight on it. I'm not suggesting anybody goes off to Switzerland, but if it persists maybe worth asking about whether the same possibility might apply. I'm sure you could get the relevant treatment here on the NHS if someone can make the right diagnosis.

That is fascinating. Wonder how they discovered this: Heart biopsy? That’s what my docs said we’d have to do to be sure of the cause. I said no thanks.

Well it's possible (though I'm not sufficient of a cardiologist to say) that it's obvious. Dental caries are well known to contribute or be associated with heart disease, so finding one of the main viruses associated with myocarditis in dental caries might be an obvious thing to look for. However, may be not so obvious for all sorts of reasons, I don't know.

I'd have to ask him whether he had a heart biopsy though I don't think so. Coxsackie B is one of the main viruses associated with myocarditis I think, so they probably just checked his teeth as one their standard diagnostic tests, and finding it there, assumed it might be causal, and needed to be treated anyway.

Yes, Beachboy1, mine were wildly abnormal the whole time. HHH is right, rest and when you think you’ve rested enough, rest more. It sounds crazy but the heart is injured and has to heal (while continuing to have to work in there!). The abnormal ECGs, the cardiac nurse told me, was the recording of the injured heart struggling. Get some good books and movies, and settle in for the healing. ❤️‍🩹 good luck!

Did you experience chest pain? I am experiencing chest pain but I don’t know how much is to be expected… I’m worried that I’m experiencing more than usual.

Yes quite a bit, very unsettling. If it gets bad do visit Emergency. When it was less bad I would immediately lie down or get into my zero-gravity chair, reclined with feet up, take a little mini-aspirin to dissolve in the mouth, have a sip of water and check to make sure I hadn’t forgotten my magnesium or Co-enzyme Q10 that day. And breathe slowly and mid-deeply (hard to do when chest pain hits—it’s disturbing to me). That’s just what I did (was told to do) but your docs may give you other advice. Some people aren’t supposed to take these things, so do check. Yes, it did hurt, and that was one way I knew it was getting better in about Month 11—chest pain was becoming less frequent. Hang in there!

Did you take colchicine? That’s the only medication I’m taking currently.

Hi Britomartis29,

That’s very helpful. I hadn’t had an explanation of what’s causing the abnormal ECGSs, partly because I’m in France and my cardiologist here can’t speak English…

Take care.

No colchicine (I’m in the US and it isn’t usually given here) but vive la France. I got great care there years ago for unrelated issues. I didn’t have the language issue (grew up speaking it) but I knew one who did. You can ask for a translation or ask for information in writing so you can translate it later. If your phone has an auto translator you can ask the doctor if he would mind if you use it. Good luck. And REST!
