Acid problems

Does anyone else get acid stomach and reflux from rivaroxaban, I've ended up with it very bad and a lot of pain had to go on proton pump inhibitors only the second day in but I think they are helping was going to have to stop taking them otherwise which would have been a big risk apparently your blood clots up worse if you've been on them a while

Hello :-)

I am not on the same medication as you are but since my heart attacks and Bypasses I am taking several medications and I suffer with acid reflux so bad even though I take a PPI never had this problem before like I do now and at the moment I am going through a bad bout of it

I do believe it could be one of my tablets or even more than one but which one is the hardest to work out

I know this won't help you much but wanted to let you know that I think sometimes the medications we take can contribute to acid reflux

I hope you manage to get it sorted :-) x

Thankyou for replying, it seems the proton pump tablets are easing it but not happy having to take them because they do have side effects when taken for a long time but no choice

You do have a choice. Famotidine works really well for acid reflux but in a different manner to PPIs. I react really badly to PPIs and used to take Ranitidine until it was taken off the market and replaced by famotidine. Research has now shown that PPIs taken very long term can increase the risk of dementia so I'm glad there's an alternative.

Thanks for that info

I'm on several medications and get acid reflux most days which I hate doing as they have side effects but I'm unsure which of my 7 medication cause it. The alternative of not taking it isn't good either isn't good either.

Yes you have a tablet to cure your ills then you need another tablet to cure the effects the tablet has then that tablet has side effects aswell so you need another tablet for that it's a circle

Hi

Just to check but you are taking it after a meal and not on an empty stomach? Otherwise, there are several other DOACS available, so it might be worth having a chat with your doctor about switching to one of those instead, as an alternative might suit you better. I had a similar problem with the calcium channel blocker Diltiazem but was switched to Verapamil and have been fine with that, so I would say it’s certainly worth trying a different DOAC first, before settling on the PPIs long term.

Thank you....I was have GORD, lax cardia and was taking PPIs to combat the acid before my heart problems., told to take it on an empty stomach. Sometimes, I take two lansarprazole or a gaviscon as I get an irritating cough at night as acid rises up.

I was told to take Lansarprazole on an empty stomach first thing. What is doac. Please?

Hi Quaddie, my apologies, DOAC stands for Direct Oral Anticoagulant, so drugs such as Apixaban, Rivaroxaban etc.

You are right to take your Lansoprazole first thing. Lansoprazole is a drug that reduces stomach acid, as you know, so needs to be taken on an empty stomach to be most effective, as I understand it. TC

I had Rivaroxaban and trird both Edoxaban and Apixaban. No acid reflux from either of them. The only disadvantage with them is that it's more than one tablet daily.

I’m getting it very bad despite taking omeprazole , but I’ve been taking my aspirin and clopidogrel before breakfast , so maybe this is why . Is it better to take them of an evening ?

When I took my rivaroxaban after my evening meal I had massive acid attacks at night, so I found it better after breakfast but after time the acid reflux got really bad and was in a lot of pain so proton pump was the only answer short term till I can get an appointment to see the specialist which might be some time

I was on Rivaroxaban for 6 years. All that time I had gastritis, severe at times. Had all sorts of investigations, endoscopies, put on pips etc. Last year I had a TIA and the stroke clinic changed me from Rivaroxaban to Apixaban. Within a week, the gastritis went and has not returned. All other meds unchanged so it must have been caused by the Rivaroxaban. No medical person ever mentioned this possibility. I'm now trying to get a GP appointment to discuss reducing/coming off the PPIs, as I may no longer need them.

I was on Apixaban and it gave me severe pains in the stomach in the night, had to come off those on to rivaroxaban and that's given me acid reflux so I'm taking the ppis for now give my stomach time to heal before I try anything else, when your in that much pain you don't care if you get dementia further along

Kimmy60Yes same issues with rivaroxaban does tend to settle after about 4 weeks or so, but apixaban no problems. May be worth asking to change

Best wishes

Do try Silicolgel - buy it from Superdrug, Tesco, Boots, etc.

It comes in white and blue coloured box.

It’s pricey , but works pretty quickly.

Recently, it comes in little individual satchets - inside the box.

Mix with little warm water in a cup.

I’ve been using this for years.

Look on Trolley.co.uk for the cheapest supermarket price.

It does come round on offer.

Take this one hour before your tablets.
