Alternative to beta blockers

I was experiencing severe breathlessness whilst exercising which coincided with my use of a beta blocker to treat AF. As a result of this, my cardiologist took me off Bisoprolol and prescribed a drug named Diltiazem, which is a calcium channel blocker as opposed to a beta blocker. It has only been a couple of weeks but so far I am cautiously optimistic that it may have solved the problem. Has anyone had any experience of Diltiazem and if so, what are your views? I thought it was worth a mention for anyone else who may have had similar issues with beta blockers.

Yes I was originally on Bisoprolol for my AF but felt dreadful on it (tiredness and increased breathlessness) was then switched to Flecainide which had no effect on my AF and then eventually onto Diltiazem (180mg per day). The Diltiazem has made a major difference to my AF although my days of sporting activities are long gone sadly, so don't know whether it will help you as much as it did me. Good luck !

Thanks for your reply. It is pleasing to hear that Diltiazem has made a significant difference for you too. I have just played football earlier today and happy to say that I’m back to where I was pre-Bisoprolol. Good luck to you also!

I blame Bisoprolol for making me depressed - but I had a lot going on at the time! A switch to Diltiazem 5 years ago made a huge difference and I'm still on it.

I have heard and read about so many people who have had adverse side effects with Bisoprolol. It’s early days for me with Diltiazem but I certainly feel so much better physically and mentally. The extreme breathlessness was particularly worrying. I’m pleased to hear that Diltiazem seems to be working for you too.

Bispoprolol is probably the first drug of choice. It suits many people but not everyone. Of course, we probably don't hear from those who have no problems with it.

For what it is worth I am not sure that it's beta blockers that are a problem so much as bisoprolol that is a problem for some.I was initially put on bisoprolol and couldn't walk more than 200m without having to stop. Was moved on to nebivolol and no issues since.

All come down to your individual tolerance to certain medications I suppose.
