beta blockers
It can be one of the side effects, I initially found this and am only on1.25mg Bisoprolol. Are you taking it in the morning as this could help. It takes many people quite some months to adjust to this drug but hopefully it will get better in time. If it doesn’t there’s other beta blockers that your physician may prescribe for you. Thank you for taking the time to reply . I have only just begun taking Bisoprolol , and I’m currently taking .25 mg … one quarter of a tablet. The plan was to take that dose for one week and then go up to half a tablet the second week over the weekend. I was having some issues with some chest pain and was advised to just stay on the lower dose until I see the cardiologist on November 8 I did go to the ER and check was checked out and everything was fine. No issues with my heart so not sure what that was all about. I did Google side effects and one thing that I did read, and I’m not sure how accurate it is, is that this particular drug can deplete your body of melatonin, making it difficult to sleep and causing insomnia… The suggestion was to take melatonin . I have taken melatonin in the past, but I didn’t always love the way I felt the next day. I always felt a little bit out of it for a while, so I’m not sure if that’s going to be the answer when I’m already tired. Seems we take a pill to fix one thing, but then the fix creates another problem.
It took about 6 weeks after op for me to get my body and Bisoprolol tolerated. My experience was it helped to make sure I'd eaten before taking the dose (1.25mg) . As I'd had a major op my sleep patterns were shot anyway. Good luck on 8th Nov.
The reduction in melatonin is indeed a common factor when on Bisoprolol along with the adaption our body needs to get used to a beta blocker. It took me so long I nearly gave up but as I have AFib realised I needed some meds. Even after a year I can still have wakeful nights but not so often now. I guess I am as used to this drug as I am ever going to be, hopefully over time the side effects will improve. Regards Kathleen
When I asked about this problem a cardiac nurse told me it messes with your melatonin production. I now take it *immediately* before going to sleep, if I fall asleep quickly then I'm usually OK. If, for any reason I don't fall asleep then I'm stuffed - that night is a write-off. I stick to a bedtime routine, take valerian and magnesium an hour before, read a book (not screen) until I'm nodding, take the Bisoprolol and turn out the light.
Also I found it got better after a few weeks but worsened again with each increase in dose. It reaches peak serum levels at 4 hours and has a 10 hour half-life. I found over 2.5mg I couldn't take it in the morning as there was enough hanging around to keep me awake at bedtime. It's an awful feeling "wired but tired".
thank you for your reply… I was taking mine in the morning and I switched to evening. I do take magnesium every night. I wondered about taking a low-dose of melatonin to see if that helps but I just I don’t want to have that hangover feeling the next day . I do not nap in the daytime as I find that interrupts my sleep. I am usually very, very tired at bedtime. I’m falling asleep watching a show . Falling asleep is not the problem, it’s staying asleep and not waking up several times.
Ever since my heart troubles, sleep has been there but in patches. So I try and get a "Total " of sleep hours, but not all at once!
Bisopropol is my life saver , you lack of sleep perhaps because you were worried about Biso
I had issues at the beginning but everything settled quickly. I'm on 3.75mg and found that splitting the dosage to 1.25mg 3 times a day really helped.
Yes I have been on Bisoprolol for over 2 years now and still cannot sleep properly. I have been using a low dose mirtazapine recently and that helps a little.
Best regards
Thank you for your reply … I have read to try melatonin but have also read this can lower BP and even on the lowest dose of Bisoprolol , my BP has become very low. I will investigate mirtazapine
