Hi everyone, I hope you are all doing well. Has anyone experienced chronic GERD even with a PPI when taking aspirin please? Thanks as ever. Judi
Chronic GERD : Hi everyone, I hope you... - British Heart Fou...
Chronic GERD
If you are taking dispersible aspirin then a change to enteric coated may solve your problems. The difference is that coated dissolve further down the digestive system and therefore don't irritate the stomach lining. Coated are available over the counter just like dispersible although they cost slightly more. If you get aspirin prescribed then get your GP to make the change, although if you pay for prescriptions its far cheaper to buy them yourself.
Hello
I think you may already take the coated aspirin like I do as well as a PPI
I go through bouts of suffering terrible GERD not sure why it comes and goes but it does
I have to watch what I am eating as certain foods will make it worse
If you are really suffering and it is not manageable then speak with your Doctor and see what they say
Let us know how you get on x
Thank you. I am having an endoscopy in the next few weeks. Hope you are okay x
I hope your endoscopy goes well. I have had several and recommend that you go for sedation as well as the throat spray. I am not sure whether you are new to gastric reflux but as a long term sufferer, I can pass on a few tips to help you along. If you are interested PM me.
I have had it for many years before taking regular aspirin,
Please I have no idea what you’re talking about. Don’t use abbreviations on here!
Hi Calnapth, GERD is Gastroeosophageal reflux disease and PPI is Proton pump inhibitor which is given to stop the stomach from producing acid causing the reflux. 😀
Lansoprazole disagreed with me, my irritable bowel flared up, was in an awful state. Research showed it can cause the very things its supposed to stop!. Now I just use gaviscon. Works for me but not necessarily for others. Still, could be worth a try
GERD is usually caused by stomach acid being too low. PPIs can reduce stomach acid production by up to 98%. I guess you can see where I’m going with this.
Ask your GP for a PPI that isn’t so aggressive, maybe.
To be clear GERD (or GORD for the Brits) or reflux disease is caused by highly acidic stomach contents, as normally produced within the stomach, flowing back into the oesophaghagus. Hence Gastro (O)esophageal Reflux Disease. Short term acidic reflux causes indigestion, long term it can cause cell change. PPIs surpress the activity of the glands which secrete the acid, and even though the back flow continues the harmful effect is reduced since the stomach contents are simply less able to cause distress or worse due to the reduction in acidity.
my consultant told me to stop taking aspirin to see if the gerd stopped which it has but still get bouts sometimes but mine is mostly due to having a hiatus hernia i no longer take aspirin but now have to take clopidogrel long term
Yes.
Do you have a specific question? I have developed it since starting on aspirin. It's a bit of a bone of contention between my cardiologist and me. I have had several endoscopies which show some irritation, and even been to a stomach specialist "off label."
I have switched to plavix instead of aspirin, which helps a little bit. I take lanzoprazole 30 mg but it doesn't help much, so the next step is to try another PPI.
The symptoms of GERD mimic heart issues, so it's rather disconcerting, and I have landed in A&E more than once with horrible chest pains that were most likely due to the GERD.
I avoid tomatoes, spicy food, citrus and more than one cup of coffee. Also, eating small portions and not too late helps a bit. But it's still a problem overall for me.
Thank you, it is very disconcerting. I have got various tests coming up so hopefully I can find out what is going on. The reason for my post was really to understand if GERD can have a big impact on our digestive system. Judi
I have bad GERD and was on omeprazole for years which really worked but since having my stent have been switched to Lansoprazole and also tried pantoprazole and none are nearly as effective as the omeprazole. However omeprazole may interact with Plavix so I am stuck on Lansoprazole until next February.
You are more than welcome, so take good care of yourself and maybe try some Gaviscon to ease your acid reflux if required.
I found that taking the PPI on waking and on an empty stomach and waiting an hour before breakfast then taking the aspirin greatly reduced my GERD symptoms.
