Dystolic Dysfunction stage 2

Hello. I’m new here. I had and ECHO that’s says I have dystolic dysfunction stage 2 or heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. I asked the dr about it but have not received an answer except that my blood pressure should be lowered. I do have a cough and mild shortness of breath. Can anyone share their experiences with me? Is life span really 5-10 years like it says on the internet? Can stage 2 go to stage 1 with treatment?

Thank you!

Heart failure is a horrid term, your heart isn't really failing as such - it's just not as efficient as it could be. It does need to be treated though so be sure to follow your doctor's advice.

I'd stay off Google as this will only feed your anxiety, people can live with heart failure for many years and with the medication and treatment options available many people report improvements in their EF over time.

I'm sure others will be along with their experiences soon.

Hi, I'm not sure what I've done with original reply, but, I meant to attached this booklet by BHF on Heart Failure.

It has a good explanation and two useful videos within it on Preserved Ejection Fraction.

Hopefully this helps.

Hi Sarah, I’ve been living with a heart that don’t function properly for 20 yrs now. You first have to find out what your ejection fraction (EF) is to know what rate your heart is actually functioning at, hopefully the repot will tell you.

Mine is functioning at 23% now and I’m classified at stage 2-3. I found this out in January. I think the normal function is around 50% and above. I was also given the option of transplant if I want but I’ve now declined it

The word heart failure is scary but more times you probably won’t die any sooner than someone else with or without an illness.

My EF actually fell to 10% about 5 years ago, but with a new device fitted and a cocktail of medications, with more added all the time, it as risen. Also you have to take care of yourself, eat healthy and exercise, along with your cocktail if given.

Let us know how you’re getting on. All the best.

Hi Sarah. The same has just happened to me. Breathlessness, swollen ankles, bnp of 1200 and diagnosis of Hf with preserved Ejection Fraction (53%). I also have atrial fibrillation. How are you being treated please? What meds etc.

So far, nothing. I had to do more tests, nuclear stress tests with imaging, cholesterol/CRP/repeat BNP testing. I’m getting another ECHO in 2 weeks and then I’m suppose to have another visit with my Dr to see what he is going to do. I can write you back and let you know at the end of the year. Sorry your going through the same thing.

thank you Sarah, that would be great. I am due to hear t9morrow or Monday if ihave diastolic dysfunction. Iamoverweight, never had high bp though and have had an echo every 2 years. It is all very confusing. I think that the longevity figures might be skewed by the age of people getting hf and the other comorbidities they have. I knowpeople who have had a failing heart from their twenties and thirties cand they are still here 25 years later.
