Stage 4 rehab....

The excellent instructor has emigrated. Various instructors (not cardiac trained) have turned up over the last month. On Monday we were told by the new instructor she is cardiac trained but she wants to move some of her stage 3 people on to the stage 4 class. As a result people who had been coming for a long time would have to go. (SOme have been attending for more than five years). There is no suggestion as to what to move on to i,e there isn;t anything on offer.

My question is: stage 3 is either 8 or twelve weeks depending on where you are in the country - is there supposedly a limit on how long attendance at stage 4 should be?

(The obvious solution is to put on more classes - one of the class is asking for the director of exercise classes for the county to come and talk to us asap). Does anyone know how much the NHS subsidises the sports centre for exercise referral classes? I know the amount I pay per session is very little......

Cardio rehab is 12 weeks here (Wirral) in a health centre, twice a week, the Stage 4 is in the very well equipped local authority sports centres, once a week for 12 weeks, cost £3 per session. The same NHS staff who deliver stage 3 also deliver stage 4

Stage 3 is 8 weeks in Herts/Beds. My Stage 4 was about £4 per session by the local (outsourced gym). Currently I only do physio exercises because of an arthritic hip. ☹️

was there a limit on the time that you could have attended stage 4? were you made aware of that time limit when you moved to stage 4? Sympathy - hips are a nightmare and the persistent pain wears you out.

There appears no limit as some people had been attending for years - some two or three times a week. Although discounted I think it brings in money as the sessions are held at quiet times like wet Wednesday afternoons! 😀

Thanks again : now looking around for alternatives - having looked before i know there isn;t much around so now looking at joining abbeginners ballet class for the over 60s!!!

Stage 4 here is £4 a week same instructor as other classes

No NHS Staff involved run at local Community Centre

All arranged by BHF 1 hour sessions no lmit to how long you go

I am in Central Scotland. Initial rehab was 10 weeks at the hospital then I was given a 12 week pass to my local council owned sports centre to do a further 10 weeks rehab with a cardiac trained instructor. The pass allowed free access to all the fitness classes and gym along with admission to our local swimming pool. Once the free pass expires annual membership is only £68 for over 60’s. My cardiac trained instructor covers several different types of classes during the week so there are options after the rehab is complete. Free swimming lessons for over 60’s are also included in the pass.

Hi,

We are fortunate in Basingstoke and Alton with a cardiac rehab centre and there is no time limit for stage 4, participants re encouraged to continue indefinitely. The classes are also provided for people on a stay well (pre event) programme. Instructor is trained. The cost is £4.60 per session with no annual fees. The centre is a charity and undertakes fundraising which may provide a level of subsidy.

The philosophy should be that everyone needs ongoing exercise and this applies especially to those with cardiac conditions. I hope you are able to get ongoing exercise with the right programme.

Thank you so much for your detailed reply - I am not hopeful that pressure will not be exerted to make the long term attendees leave. You are so right about what the philosophy should be but I think that the reality is that that financial motives are driving the whole decision making process - but I am becoming very cynical in my old age!

I think cardiac rehab is organised and paid for by the Cardiac dept at the hospital. You'd have to ask them. I know ours is, because I asked why there is no rehab for disabled people except an outside group funded separately and not cardiac trained and it was passed on to teh cardio dept who said they can not fund it.
