my Doctors have been trying to get my cholesterol down further they tried three statins I asked to try a very low dose ofPrevastatin 10mg started this 4th July. I haven’t experienced any side effects so far that’s good but I am very nervous as I know statins can effect your liver. This last week my brother is in hospital with total liver failure which my sister informed me this minute that he was a heavy drinker for a long time but it still worries me. Do you get regular blood tests when taking statins. I am 73 now and I want too keep my liver n a reasonable condition my Doctor never said anything about blood tests

Thankyou for your kind words I am going to the doctors next week for my heart failure review will mention this to her

I am so sorry to hear about your beloved brother and the damage that drink has done to his liver, no wonder you are worried about your own health with that history in the family.

You started your post saying that your Dr is trying to lower your cholesterol level and sounds like its been going on a while, the change of statins is that because of side effects or were they just not working?

It is wise to try the new drug as high cholesterol can have some nasty implications to your body, but you will have regular blood tests that will tell how the liver is functioning and the medication will be adjusted accordingly.

It is very rare that statins would damage your liver to the level what you are fearing { unlike alcohol } so please try not to worry.

Chase your Dr for the checks if you feel to long a period has passed.

Good luck with it all

Thankyou for your comments yes statins give me muscle problems but this one hasn’t as yet. Although Indecided to add a Q10 as a prevention this might have helped

I hope that it does for you, take care

I've been taking pravastatin for over 5yrs , 10mgs and no side effects noticed. I have annual blood tests to check cholesterol, liver function and potassium levels at my gp surgery. I had to try a couple of different statins before settling on this one and all good so far.

can I ask does it go down with such a low dose as I believe prevastatin isn’t as effective as other ones

I can't speak for others but mine went down to 4.8 from 5.7 which is acceptable for me. I could get it lower with healthier eating but I still like a danish pastry with my morning coffee! 🤣

I have been taking statins for 25 years, plus other medication, and I also drink alcohol as I have throughout my life, but not to excess. I have an annual lipid and liver function blood test, and as far as liver function is concerned I am fine. The annual test is, I believe, the norm for those of us with heart conditions taking statins who suffer from high cholesterol. If you have concerns about your liver given your family circumstances plus statins, I suggest you discuss this with your GP and ask what is planned for ongoing management covering statins, liver function, and lipid levels which should hopefully allay any fears you have about your liver in particular. The bottom line is, however, that many forms of medication are processed by the liver before they are eliminated from the body, and that does bring with it a risk of damage, but that risk has to be offset against the need to take the medication in the first place. Hope you get sorted

I was put on statins years ago and had trouble with muscle cramps so I decided to come off them much to the dismay of my doctor. Thirty years later diagnosed with AF had I stayed on statins would I be in this situation not sure. I’m now on atorvastatin 20mg and I also take a plant sterol yogurt drink everyday. My cholesterol is now 3. I think the statin or maybe some other drug is causing me achy legs but take the view I need the meds to reduce the risk of a stroke 🥰

I’m on Rosuvastatin 20 mg and also entizimide 10 mg.Been on those quite a while seems to keep level around 5. Been on various drugs as I had a triple bypass age 31 in 1977 I am now 77.

Frankly never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d reach here even play a reasonable game of walking football. You get to a stage when each little happening physically makes you wonder is it time, when as a youngster you’d hardly give it a second thought.

In our cases we’ve reached a ripe old age and if whatever you take keeps you going then you must take it.
