I have a Kardia but looking for a watch that alerts me and monitors my heart arrhythmia, some adverts say they record heart rate but do not say arrhythmia. Thanks

Hi Bee-Honest

I hope you’re well.

I have the Series 8 Apple Watch. It records my heart rate, blood oxygen, performs an ECG, and can notify me if I’m in AF. As I don’t have AF, this isn’t a feature that I use.

With all types of devices like this, they are not 100% accurate but do provide an indication of your heart health to some degree. The equipment available at the hospitals will provide more accurate data/figures of your heart.

You can also choose from a variety of straps and materials, i.e., whether you want a metal like stainless steel which is more expensive, or just a standard rubber strap. They also come in different colours and series.

There is also the Fitbit which is popular, and I believe Samsung now also have their own range too.

I hope others come along with some more ideas for a watch.

All the best.

Thanks for your comprehensive reply. I looked online most said heart rate but not arrhythmia.

I've had PAF for over 20 years, this is now going into persistant. Sometimes I feel quite unwell and breathless, but no palpitations and when I use my Kardia it shows I'm in AF.

I have an Android phone and would like my watch to pair with it. Not wishing to pay 'over hundred' for this.

Have you had a look at the Samsung range? I believe they are cheaper than the Apple Watches and they can be connected to an Android by downloading an app on your phone first. But again, you may find the same issue which is that I think Samsung only record AF as well, and not PAF.

My partner paid somewhere in the range of £700 for my Apple Watch but that was mainly attributed to it being the latest series, as well as choosing a metal strap etc. I’m sure for the most part however, they probably all do the same thing.

PAF means Paryximal Atrial Fibrillation, this can be days & months between episodes, I seem to be having more episodes frequently. Hence I want the watch, as long as it detects AF. Thanks for replying. My partner is looking online now, but would be good to have a recommendation from an AF sufferer. Glad you don't have this condition.

Yes, I did think PAF and AF were somewhat similar, though this could be ignorance on my part as I don’t have a rhythm disorder myself. I hope someone with AF comes along soon with a suitable recommendation for you.

Have a lovely weekend ☀️

Some fitbit models have an AF detection feature... but can't say how reliable it is as haven't had to use it myself.

I have a Samsung Watch 5. It records heart rate, blood oxygen, ECG, sleep patterns, weight etc but it doesn't do arrythmias. However when running an ECG it will let you know if the result is showing normal sinus rhythm, A fib or inconclusive.

I have a fitbit sense 2 that has ecg and monitors AF. I like it and it’s very much cheaper than the apple watch.

hi there, I do not have one but my cardiologist recommended a Withings watch for this. At the moment I use my garmin for heart rate and kardia to record any episodes of arrhythmia as the Kardia is 6lead and far more accurate than a single lead watch

Thanks for your replies and recommendations, a bit of research required now.

I have an Apple Watch which records my heart beat but it does say that it does not look for AF. I also have a blood pressure monitor by Microlife which does look for AF, which I find very reliable and it picks up my AF - I know this correct as I also feel the arrhythmia with each heart beat as I have had an Aortic Valve replacement.

My blood pressure machine rcognises af, but looking for a watch that does that. Not always suitable to use your BP monitor when out and about.

I wear an Apple Watch all the time and take my blood pressure everyday as well. The BP machine picks up the AFib whereas the Apple Watch does not. I am not aware of any Watch that actually looks for AF.

My Apple Watch takes ECG which can indicate arrhythmia

I agree. Don’t think theses any wearable device out there which can actually detect arrhythmia when you may not even be aware you are in AF. Most devices rely on you “testing” for it when you suspect you may be in AF.

I suffer from severe arrhythmia with very little ill effects, I recently joined Arrhythmia Alliance on this forum and have found some of the advice and comments from other members , very helpful.

Hi, I have a Fitbit Charge 5 .it notifies me of irregular heart rhythms and takes ECG traces. I bought it for £130 a month ago.

tbh I didn’t know you could set your Apple Watch to auto monitor and alert you when went into AF. I thought, when you suspected you’d gone into AF, that you had to select the “ECG” option in apps and hold your finger on the crown dial for 30 sec to record your heart trace. That would then tell you whether you were in sinus rhythm or AF and log it an accordingly. I didn’t know the Apple watch could automatically detect in “background” and alert you when you went into AF.

For anyone using an Apple Watch for AF purposes, Am I alone in thinking this ? Harry

Thanks to all who replied, interesting reading. Sounds like an Apple watch 8 would be the best option for my needs but a bit pricey. I have an android phone, but recommended to get an apple phone which will pair and save the info..... from the watch.
