Has anyone recently undergone Aortic valve replacement and experienced a rather unpleasant taste from anything they eat or drink.

Your thoughts please

HiI haven't, but many in the Facebook group that I'm a member of have. I think it did go eventually for them.

The group is UK Aortic and Heart Defects Pre and Post surgery if you are interested

I have been suffering from an Oral Fungal infection due to side effects of Empaglufozin which has now cleared. Unfortunately I have been left with the taste problem. Everything tastes vile sort of like chemicals is the nearest I can explain. All the GP and HF said was Oh dear. I am forcing myself to eat and live in hope things will improve. Good luck x

If you are talking just one to 10 days post op then yes and it is quite normal. I think it is the very strong pain killers that are administered at that time that cause it. In that case it will resolve itself and your taste should be back to normal after a couple of weeks, but if you are talking more long term, then I have no knowledge of it.

Thank you for that. I lost 10kg just didn't want to eat. 6 days post op now and eating a little better, still with strange taste.

Yep, 6 days post op you will still have the taste. I don't know why they don't tell patients this, because it is so common and it does upset some people when they already have enough to deal with. Good luck.

I am sorry that you are going through this, particularly as it has caused you to go off your food and lose weight at a time when good nutrition is more important for you

quite a few medications can affect your sense of taste (& smell) but this is rarely mentioned as it seems minor! to me it is very important

I recently spent a year with an altered sense of taste, it did not affect everything but it made about half of what i usually eat tase disgusting (including chocolate, wine and anything with cooked tomatoes, but not raw ones!) - i got very depressed because i could not eat out and had to revise all my regular cooking

I now blame the hefty dose of oral antibiotics i had to take for a flare up of diverticulitis - i think it badly upset my gut flora and this can affect your sense of taste

I can't offer you any helpful suggestions but i hope that you can find enough things which are tasty enough to tempt you and that things get back to normal soon

Thank you ever so much for your lovely kind words.

My poor wife is anosmic and suffers from sampters triads syndrome with no sense of smell or taste, even she says that she doesn't get this foul taste. They warned about possible loss of appetite, the elderly gent in the bed next to me experienced the same thing.

Again many thanks.
