This sounds like you’re experiencing heart palpitations. This can happen for a number of reasons such as stress, caffeine, diet, exercise or your medication.
It could also be a post surgery symptom after your heart surgery. I haven’t had surgery myself, but I’m sure others will share their experiences of this with you.
Sometimes, there are other underlying causes for heart palpitations such as an overactive thyroid or diabetes for example.
Usually heart palpitations are considered harmless however, if they increase in frequency, this is something that you should inform your GP or cardiologist about.
I hope you get to the bottom of it
Palpitations are sensations of your heart beating irregularly or too fast. They happen for many reasons, some of which described already.
However, palpitations are not something ever to be ignored so please see your GP asap and if still experiencing palpitations get an ECG asap for a diagnosis as without you will never know. Most GP surgeries or urgent care centres will have a ECG Machine. Many ‘palpitations’ are benign but none should be ignored.
If palpitations are accompanied by symptoms such as chest pain, clamminess, extreme breathlessness whilst resting then don’t hesitate to call for urgent help.
Take long, slow, deep breaths, make sure you stay very well hydrated as you can end up peeing a lot and consider taking an electrolyte drink or adding small amount of salt and sugar to your water - personally I find pure coconut water works well. I find keeping legs higher than heart whilst experiencing palpitations and keeping calm the best way to help myself.
Dear you,
It certainly sounds like palpitations { remember that I am not medically trained } and should be reported to your Dr or 111 if out of hours, given your history.
I had similar feelings, but mine were more to do with being more 'tuned into my heart' well more to do with thinking the bloody thing would just stop to be honest with you!
I found { after a full check up to rule out anything } that some very basic relaxation exercises helped.
I'm not talking about balancing on one leg pointing south as the moon rose, { wish I could } but very simple breathing..
Hope you get sorted soon.
I'm the same as you sometimes I can hear my heart beating when trying to get to sleep, But at a regular Pace, what bothers me is when my heart is in AF which it is sometimes that will keep me awake worrying, but what you're describing is just hearing your heart beating I assume at a regular rhythm, so if that's the case I wouldn't worry, regards Ted
How is your hearing? I have it a lot of the time as pulsatile tinnitus
I have this especially when I lay down to sleep at night and it’s Pulsating tinitus, very annoying but not taken seriously. Mine comes and goes but is worse if my blood pressure is slightly raised.
Before I had pacemaker fitted, I used to love hearing my heart beat normally after a bout of AF
I hear mine at times, a regular beat, having had OHS for AVR 4 years ago. Admittedly it's a mechanical valve I had put in. I don't normally notice it but when I do it does tend to be at night when it's quiet. I'm only on warfarin.Take care.
Andy
Don’t forget to wear those hearing aids
Your grand its something you used to experience when you were much younger and never gave it a second thought, you are probably a bit more aware of it now and glad you are feeling fine again today.
I jave had this problem since childhood and have always been told its just the way I am!? It can be a bit disconcerting but over time I have got used to it. Sfyer my bypass 8 weeks ago it was louder bit has got quieter now.
