Hi my husband has recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure after an a accidentle discovery of a BP of 266/166 with no symptoms. It's coming down now but they said his kidney function was about 50% and he's having a kidney scan. But they haven't said if one is causing the other or what happens next. Does anyone have any info they could give us.TIA

a very stressed mummatez

Hello :-)

He certainly did have a high blood pressure it is a good job they picked it up and pleased that it is starting to come down

At this stage I would imagine and why they are sending him for the scan will be to see what is causing it and then they will know what to do but till then they possibly are not 100 % sure so are been very good in getting the scan done first and then I am sure they will sort it out

Please do not think this is your Husbands case and I am reluctant to write it as the last thing I want to do is stress you and make you worse but a family member went for a pre op assessment some years ago and his BP was sky high so they started doing extra tests as well as they got his BP down and he had kidney failure and why his BP was so high and had he never had that pre op done he would have never known so it saved his life and they sorted everything out so in a way he was lucky

They are just been precautious which try and think positive that it is better to get these things checked so they know everything is ok than just guessing

Let us know how he gets on :-) x

Hi thanks for replying, but no he's never had any health issues except for gout. He's always been fighting fit and active, that's why it's shocked me so much. It really came out of nowhere

That is very high. I do hope he is taking it very seriously and has changed his lifestyle and also taking his medications as prescribed.

the only thing I would add is he should look at his lifestyle. If he smokes stop. If overweight review the diet and try to lose weight. If he drinks cut back. Otherwise the scan will determine next steps. Good luck.

He was sent straight to A & E from the doctors and kept in overnight to get his bp down with medication. It's more down to around 170-190/ 90-110. He has a telephone appointment on Monday with his gp to check how it's going and whether his meds will need adjusting again. Hee doesn't smoke, rarely drinks but is overweight, they've given him no advice what do ever except take these tablets and keep an eye on your bp at home. The hospital wanted him to have an ambulatory bp done, but apparently there's an 18 month wait for it to be done through the hospital 😮

Recalled from long ago Uni physiology - there is a chicken and egg relationship between high blood pressure and kidney function. The kidneys filter massive volumes of blood so any damage will increase resistance to the flow through them increasing blood pressure which in turn causes more damage. The kidney produces a peptide called renin which is then converted to angiotensin which constricts the smooth muscle in blood vessels throughout the body - this increases blood pressure. A malfunctioning renin-angiotensin system can contribute to high blood pressure.

Little comfort perhaps, but having discovered the problem, it’s being investigated and treated. Best of luck to you both.

I agree but felt others were covering that. In the meantime he needs to prepare for what is to come!

I hope that what others have already said is reassuring for you, you must be very concerned that this has come out of the blue

you mention that your husband has gout, this may be a factor due to the condition itself or any medication he takes to treat it - but now that the doctors are aware and investigating i am sure that answers will come - i hope that will also mean helpful treatment and peace of mind for you both

Hi, a very similar story to mine! Fit and thought healthy nhs worker but really high BP (190/110) was sent for kidney ct scan,it came back normal.! However, like Steve G suggests, it can be caused by an endocrine disorder of the adrenal glands which sit on top of the kidneys.I suggest you ask for urea and electrolyte blood test to check balance of sodium and potassium. There is a blood test called ARR which will give some answers. Does your husband have headaches and excessive sweating?Wishing you both well.

Hi and thanks for the info, his kidney scan is normal, meaning they look normal so that's something. His BP is coming down nicely and he has an appointment next week to be fitted with an ambulatory BP machine for a week. As I said before he had/has no symptoms, Every time I ask do you have/feel this he says no. Guess he'll be having more blood tests via the hospital, and the gp is working with him to get his BP where they would like it.Mine had also come down now he's home, settled and getting help 🤣🤣
