OT - Weekend Arithmetic

A student has missed an excessive number of days at school and the principal called him to his office and requested for an explanation.

The student said, There just isn't enough time for school. I need 8 hours of sleep a day, which adds up to about 122 days a year. Weekends off is 104 days a year. Summer vacation is about 60 days. If I spend about an hour on each meal, that's 3 hours a day or 45 days a year. I need at least 2 hours of exercise and relaxation time each day to stay physically and mentally fit, adding another 30 days. Add all of that up and you get about 361 days. That only leaves 4 days for school. The principal is confused, but can't figure out why.

What is wrong with the student's argument?

Within each year non school days are w/e plus hols, total 164 days, leaving (in a non leap year) year 201 days for school .

Within each and every day whether at school or not there are 8 hours for sleep, 3 hours for meals, and 2 hours for leisure, total 13 hours, leaving 11 hours in which to go to school on school days, which is more than adequate.

Perhaps the head teacher needs a refresher course

The Principal shouldn't be in post! 😂

My brain won't focus enough to work out the correct process and true calculation, but I'm sure it's cheating to count the same hours and/or days more than once by using them again in different categories - hope that makes sense (I know what I mean!).

Thanks for the cheery end to the day. I was trying to work out earlier whether doing my daily 5-letter word puzzle has helped to improve my brain fog as I seem to have gone back to not solving them every day just lately. 🤔😁

We have a family competition with Wordle, Quordle and Octordle most mornings via WhatsApp. My sister usually beats me but if it was real and imaginary numbers, spherical geometry, 3D motion, etc. I would win every time! 😁

A school friend does the Latin Wordle which is all Greek to me! 😁

Aha, might have to change my word(s) - I use CAUSE then BROIL to cover the vowels, so have never solved it by line 2! 🤔

I usually have a few words like BEADS, FAINT, OUTER but today I started off with NIFTY for some reason!! First time I've ever got it in two goes!!

Thank you, but I think I'd be more interested in finding out about spherical geometry and 3D motion! 🤔🙃😂😂

Brain fog? Try learning a new language. I'm learning Norwegian on Duolingo.

Purpleazalia profile image
Purpleazalia in reply toQualipop

I downloaded the app many years ago, with the aim of learning Spanish or Greek, but did no more than peek at it once!! My life was much busier and work was stressful then.

I now have time on my hands and do need something stimulating to stop me watching tv all day! Thank you for the reminder, I'll take a proper look at it this time 😀

Qualipop profile image
Qualipop in reply toPurpleazalia

Just make sure it's a language you WANT to do. You can try various but don't have to s tick with them. I tried Welsh and just couldn't do it LOL. Stick to the free version.

in reply toPurpleazalia

If you have time on your hands, as an alternative to learning a language you may little use, why not consider learning to play a musical instrument, or pick up the instrument where you left off years ago, perhaps at school. Whilst it can be challenging it certainly stimulates the brain as I have found, and you are never too old to learn. There's plenty out there to help you get going and loads of stuff on Youtube in particular. Apart from my main instrument I recently bought a recorder for the enormous sum of £4 to help my granddaughter who had just started to play, having never played a recorder in my life!

Purpleazalia profile image
Purpleazalia in reply to

You have stirred up memories of the only instrument I attempted to learn in my childhood - the good old recorder. I remember my attempt being very high pitched, and the look on the faces of my parents put me off continuing 😂

You sound like a fun grandad. One of my sons is very musical - he started with a basic keyboard and has progressed to play bass guitar, the violin, and now the cello. I wonder if his old keyboard is still around... 🤔

in reply toPurpleazalia

Go on dig that keyboard out! You will soon be playing boogie woogie like Ladyva (look her up on YouTube) 👍

Purpleazalia profile image
Purpleazalia in reply to

She's fab. I'll start with the basics and see how it goes. The grandchildren will sing along if I learn some nursery rhymes - and they won't mind a few wrong notes! 😂😂

...and I've bookmarked a complete beginners book in case one of the children ask if there's anything I'd like for mother's day!

in reply toPurpleazalia

Brilliant! Stick with it. It comes together in the end. Little and often for practising is the key (no pun intended 😆).

O.K. You get 100 lines to be written with quill and ink "I must do all problems set on my HU forums in a timely manner presenting my work in a neat and tidy fashion showing all my working out."

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply toMichaelJH

My slate isn't big enough to write on all that on it!! 😂

Now that's a word I remember well!😳🤣

GrannyE profile image
GrannyE in reply toLezzers

don’t you realise you cannot write on a slate with a quill pen? You really should use parchment to make a proper job of it.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply toGrannyE

I knew I should have attended the history classes, I would have known I needed parchment paper and not slate 🤣

GrannyE profile image
GrannyE in reply toMichaelJH

my problem is that I always blot my work with pen and ink never mind quill pen and ink. Not only that I end up with an inky finger.

Looks like the Gin has won over on the Quiz unless of course you wanted to know how many G&Ts are in a bottle using a standard 4cl measure. Now I bet Lezzers can answer that one I do believe she uses 1 lt bottles not these small 750ml bottles.

Regards

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply toPrada47

Indeed! But it really does depend on how large the G&T's are! 🍸

Good Afternoon Michael

We breezed through pancake day with no virtual do, phew. Now I’m wondering whether we should be having Virtual Lent?

An opportunity to virtually give up. Or give up virtually…!

Now overused the word virtual, I’m sure it made sense when I started!

GrannyE profile image
GrannyE in reply toJeremiahObadiah

hang on there. What would you like me to give up? I have given up so much alreadyI really don’t want to give up any more. I love my virtual cream cakes and Iced buns We are supposed to be cheering each other up on depriving ourselves! I am having another slice of virtual pavlova with sprinkles strawberries and cream.

I gather we will all be having virtual lettuces Soon and be indulging in actual turnips instead.

GrannyE profile image
GrannyE in reply toGrannyE

meant to read not depriving ourselves.

JeremiahObadiah profile image
JeremiahObadiah in reply toGrannyE

True true.

Don’t mention the virtual tomatoes and the actual turnips-I might have to cry.!!

Enjoy that virtual feast-the v-pavlova sounds perfect.

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply toJeremiahObadiah

Are two virtuals similar to a double negative so that if GrannyE is having a virtual feast of a virtual pavlova she is actually tucking into one.?/ RufusScamp was a teacher and should know. . 🤣

GrannyE profile image
GrannyE in reply toMichaelJH

I know that in maths two negatives equal a positive but in As You Like It Aliena says ‘I cannot go no further”. That has always puzzled me. I know the meaning she meant to convey was that she could go no further but that double negative always throws me.

I suppose in a virtual world Michael anything could happen - pigs might fly. What fun unless one lands on one - splat!

JeremiahObadiah profile image
JeremiahObadiah

Virtually virtuous = nearly virtuous

Or

Virtually virtuous =not actually virtuous

Or

Virtually virtuous= doubly virtuous

Is RufusScamp able to enlighten us?

Maybe he was a chemistry teacher so he might be virtually useless for this language issue!

GrannyE profile image
GrannyE in reply toJeremiahObadiah

virtually virtuous could mean almost having high moral standards, which I am quite sure all of us here have.

Well, I believe that LowerField has already fully explained the answer to the puzzle. I can simply agree.

That was another fun puzzle to consider. Thank you!
