Amlodipine 5mg: Hi I have been... - British Heart Fou...
Amlodipine 5mg
Good morning Wobble and welcome to the forum.
Amlodipine is often prescribed to keep blood pressure down.
Very common for those approaching older ages.
Your stenosis is not too bad. When it is bad you will be diagnosed as severe stenosis.
My hospital classified it as mild then moderate then severe. It was years going from mild to moerate but only months going from moderate to severe. I then felt tired or exhausted. I had a replacement valve. Eg AVR.
AVR is a big operation but very safe. Rather a long recovery, often as much as three months. But what a wonderful op. I felt so fit and well at the end of recovery. And the heart hospital is just fabulous. Nothing like the general wards. What lovely staff and brilliant surgeons.
Best wishes

Thank you for your reply Blackcatsooty!
I was diagnosed November after going to doctors in May last year I'm waiting for ct scan next month and am only 58 lol they think aortic valve is possibly biscupid? Am shocked at how little I can now do before going dizzy and how fast from May last year to now how unfit I feel? I'm probably the only person I know who is looking forward to having a new valve lol 😆 x
I was bicuspid. Never knew that fact until I was 70 years old.
I presume us bicuspids just get stenosed faster than triple leafs.
I didn’t grasp that stenosis means blocked.
Your description of how you are suggests your op is approaching sooner rather than later. So diagnosis of moderate seems an understatement. But your CT scan will tell you a more up to date situation. Actually it was not long for me going from moderate to severe.
Waiting is by far the worst bit of AVR.
After the op all is wonderful, unbelievable. Rehab is a few months, perhaps three months, then you have your life back.
So you are right to look forward to your op.
As the op approached I was sleepy for 22 hours each day.
Covid meant I had to travel to London as all local heart hospitals closed. But the London hospital was fabulous and wonderful. Eleven out of ten !
You are on the young side. But every bit of fitness and diet will make your op easier.
Success is 99%.

Hello Wobble. I'm sorry to hear about your aortic stenosis . Yoy might find this facebook group useful. facebook.com/groups/1864350... It's very friendly & helpful, and it's specifically for people who might have to undergo aortic valve surgery.
Hello Wobble , Sorry to hear you have had problems with Amlodipine, i also had a bad reaction, i am alergic to Gluten and Lactose, but there was nothing in the patient leaflet to say there was any of the above. So my doctor changed me Rampiril 10 mg. I have been ok since. I also have aortic stenosis they said very mild, but because of the pandemic, i have not seen anyone yet.Hope you feel better soon? J
My mother had aortic stenosis due to her bicuspid aortic valve. I think she was put on Ramapril so maybe a change might help. I was put on Amlodipine for high BP earlier this year, I has awful side effects, swollen legs and non stop palpitations, then changed to Candesartan.
My mother had replacement valve, in 2008 and still doing very well even at age of 87.
Hi
I was diagnosed with aortic stenosis last year and mine is mild - it was picked up from a heart murmur that was found. I had an ECG and heart scan but they didn't do anymore follow up tests. I take amlodipine and ramapril. There is a lot of different kinds of blood pressure medication and I tried a few until they found the ones that were ok for me. They all have different side effects and it's a case of finding which one is best for you
5mg Amlodipine is a low dose and strange it had such an effect although there are very many possible reactions to it. It has the advantage of not having any side effects on stopping taking it. Overdosing, more than 10mg per day, can be very dangerous. ---- nhs.uk/medicines/amlodipine... ---- singlecare.com/blog/amlodip... ---- ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

I have posted this link as I unknowingly took 75mg of Aspirin with Amlodipine 10mg, Ramipril 10mg, and Simvastatin 20mg. This might have caused some Kidney damage as my last readings from a hospital appointment showed lower figures than would be expected at my age - 80 very shortly - this combination can also cause higher blood pressure it seems. I'm also told that 20mg of Simvastatin is the maximum to take with 10mg of Amlodipine.
In the past, I often had appointments with nurses, but they have all vanished from my surgery, and it could be they did not have sufficient knowledge of drugs that a qualified doctor would have. Some advice in the past was, politely, somewhat misleading.
My wife has SVT and cardiologist has just changed her from amlodipine to diltiazem. They said it was a better medication. It is intended for angina, arrhythmia and hypertension. She's only just started but is glad to get rid of amlodipine as she suffered ankle swelling and also lives her grapefruit!
I started with 5mg amlodipine and then went to 10mg as an add-on to other bp meds. The only time I ever had a problem was with one type of generic. Most generics are fine. Good luck 😀
