Accelerated Cholesterol Buildup Leading to Second Stent in 6 Months

Hi,

I had a stent fitted about 6 months ago and was told that I would probably ned a second one fitted in 10 year in another artery. However after having a number of chest pains I was readmitted on 1st Jan and had a second one fitted. Has anyone had an experience of such accelerated build up and what outcomes did they have. I have been put on the usual drugs plus Ezetimibe 10mg and Isosorbide Mononitrate 30mg.

Thanks for any advice/comments.

Michael

Hello Michael, did you receive an invitation to attend a Cardio Rehab course? That would give you the opportunity to explore your diagnosis with some very experienced and knowledgeable cardiac nurses in a supportive environment.

I was surprised about the "ten year" prediction. Cardiologists are usually extremely wary about precise predictions about the future development of our conditions. Mainly because they simply don't know! Atherosclerosis has a habit of developing in a random and unpredictable fashion, so just because an angiogram shows a particular picture today there's no guarantees what will be the picture in twelve month's time, let alone ten year's time.

Hi Chappychap, thanks for the reply, I did cardio rehab when I had my first stent and was back swimming lengths and in the gym when the second episode occurred. I am back for another cardio assessment tomorrow but so far no-one can explain why I furred up so quickly. Anyway thanks again and looking forward to the future. M

It sounds like classic restenosis. Was it the same artery? I had cardiac arrest due to a blockage in a different artery 8 months after stents, but that is slightly different. Given , experience, consider yourself fortunate that it was detected before a serious event.

Hi Paigal and thanks for the reply. It was a different artery. The original stent was fine so luckily no restenosis. There is another artery that branches into the stented artery and they are now concerned about that one but are loath to stent it as it can cause problems as it is a junction and there is already a stent in the other artery. Time will tell. M

Follow-up After the Cardio Rehab assessment yesterday, I have been told that I might have Familial hypercholesterolaemia. If anyone has been diagnosed with this are you on any other drugs than atorvastatin or ezetimibe as I am already on these two. Many thanks in advance. M
