has anyone else had this where they feel the need to take a deep breath but also feel they can’t get enough air sometimes?
I’ve noticed this the last few days. Once I’m asleep in bed it isn’t a problem. It can be a good few hours and I don’t think about it then it comes on where I feel I need to take the breath. I wouldn’t say I have any other alarming pains alongside it

I get this feeling, and have had it on and off for decades. Sometimes I think it’s related to anxiety. Not exactly breathless, but a feeling that a deep breath won’t work - then I end up yawning eventually. Disappears at night as you say.
Yes, I sometimes get this, mostly just after I wake up. A couple of deep breaths and I’m back to normal. Possibly linked to low level anxiety. I’ve tried to discuss this, along with a low heart rate with my heart failure nurse but she’s not interested. Obviously, as far as she’s concerned it’s nothing to worry about.
Thankyou for the reply. Yeah it comes and goes. Sometimes I feel I’m doing it alot like right now then other times I don’t tend to notice it. I guess if you are thinking about it it makes you do it more
I have bouts of this! But I’ve realised it’s always when there’s something significant going on. It happened a lot after I lost my mum, and returns every now and then. When it does I ask myself ‘what are you bothered about’? And sometimes it’s something I haven’t consciously been worrying about. But as soon as I identify the cause, it goes. I mentioned it to my GP and she recommended breathing exercises.
I guess this makes sense as I got some results back from a scan yesterday although I’ve get this has been more noticeable the last week. Maybe the anxiety of getting the results has brought it on.
I have started doing some cardio this week aswell hiit workouts so I did initially think it’s that but I am quite a fit person anyway and don’t find I struggle for breath whilst working out
I have been suffering with this for quite a few years now, but recently it has got worse so I got checked for Asthma and COPD which were both negative. My doctor recommended a ECG which I had done the other day. They weren’t happy with the reading which resulted in me spending the next 8 hours in A&E attached to numerous wires. The result is I have LBBB (left bundle branch block) and LVH (left ventricular hypertrophy) either one causes the heart to not pump efficiently. I am now waiting for an Echocardiogram. I would recommend you go to your doctor and get it looked into.
I have found physiotherapists more helpful than doctors on this. One used to get me to focus on emptying my lungs when ithappened, and let breathing in take care of itself. It was hard to do at first, but worked. Another put a lot of attention into improving my abdominal breathing and got me doing it regularly. And psychologically there seem to be two different ways of responding to anxiety - some people don't want to let anything go, and tend towards asthma, and some of us don't want to let anything in, and tend towards this difficulty.
Hi Lcfc85. I have exactly the same, especially when trying to do anything physical or push myself. Its as if I cant get enough oxygen in my lungs yet tests show I have good oxygen levels. My gp referred me to the respitory clinic for checking so Im going through tests at the moment and theyve given me inhalers which help despite not having asthma or anxiety. Its only the breathlessness when out walking anywhere that makes me anxious! Sadly the advice from that consultant clashes with my cardiologist advice so no joined up communication between departments but I'm working on that now. Id definitely ask your gp to refer you for further investigation and hopefully you will get some help with it. In the meantime I eat a lot of greens to keep my iron levels up as that helps to increase your oxygen too. I do wonder if its our heart condition or our meds thats causing the problem though. Id be interested to see how you get on so best of luck!
