would 3/4 of a 1.25mg bisoprolol do anything. 1 tablet makes me lightheaded. I’ve been taking 3/4 at night but my cardiologist doesn’t think that’s doing anything so said take 1/2 twice a day. He said it wouldn’t make me lightheaded but it has.

Hello :-)

This is one of the side effects of this med I take it and I get light headed

1.25mg is what I am on and a very small dose I think it is the smallest they do and so to take any less I would not think is wise

If it really is something you cannot cope with instead of decreasing the dose I would push to see if they would change it to another beta blocker but I would not reduce it any lower

Let us know how you get on :-) x

really can’t bare being lighthearted. It’s because I have low Bp to begin with

in reply toNumberonedog

Hello :-)

I know it is a beta blocker but does help keep your blood pressure down to but I think most beta blockers will lower your blood pressure

Are you checking your BP at home and if so is it going any lower ?

I think you need to talk with your Doctor next week insist you at least have a telephone call and hopefully they can sort this out for you :-) x

Good advice even my GP will not let me reduce dose without my cardiologist input!

My doc is happy for me to split the dose in half and take half am and half pm. I am on 5 mg and have no side effects. Might be worth taking your BP as Bisoprolol can lower BP

yes I do have low Bp

Hi I am on 1.25mg and my bp is low . I also find it drops my heart rate to early 50s. I have persevered with it and now take it just before I go to bed and feel I am now getting used to it. The consultant has upped mine to 2.5mg and just waiting for the prescription to come through. I am going to persevere for awhile and hopefully things will settle. Good luck.

Hi Numberonedog

I’m on 1.25mg. Bisoprolol too, or rather, was! I found it was causing me lightheadedness, too and my hr was dropping into the 40s at night. I stuck with it for a while but i didn’t seem to adjust, so I reduced the dose to half a tablet per day and that seems to work for me. I am super sensitive to meds though, for some reason - I even get a reaction taking paracetamol 🙄 Whilst, technically, it isn’t supposed to be doing anything at such a low dose, it’s still keeping my resting heart rate in the mid 60s as opposed to the high 70s it was before I started treatment, so my cardiologist is happy, even if he did roll his eyes when I told him what I’d done😀

I take 10 mg bisoprolol at night. Doesn't give me any side effects. Years ago when I started it, I used to get dizzy, but blamed it on my cocktail of meds. (Which I'm still on).

Your body gets used to them eventually. In fact my cardiologist says they advise patients to push through the side effects, because it is such a valuable drug.

in reply toSilvertail

I take 10 mg in the morning, first few weeks I felt like I was walking through soup . I’m ok now , i take it along with every other medication I’m on , just shove them all in at once 😂

LOL, same here, and often manage to drop a few on the floor. 🤣

in reply toSilvertail

😂😂😂 I do that !! Then I wonder if maybe I’ve lost a few 😂

I hear you! Got mine mixed up yesterday ( I sort them into boxes for a week at a time). The pharmacist here, gives out the cheaper generic varieties, and it depends what they have in stock each time. Trouble is, they have the same drug in different sizes and colours. It's fun when you are sorting them, especially if you start a new variety in the middle of the week - and drop them on the floor. 😂😪

in reply toSilvertail

hahhaa!! Omg my chemist does the same , it’s always brands I’ve never seen before , it’s like buying a gucci bag from wish

clearly your health professional sees the benefit of you being on bisoprolol or s/he wouldn't have prescribed it. as someone else has suggested, maybe see if they can switch bisoprolol out for an alternative. changing the dose without instruction from the prescriber is akin to self-medicating which is really inadvisable!

I was on 1.25 too, light headed all the time and my resting heart rate was 38 so my GP stopped it

in reply toDredd2000ad

38?!! 😳😳😳 lowest I’ve seen mine was 28 and I got a terrible fright but I’m sure it was just a blip .

Hi - if your resting heart rate is below 60 bpm (bradycardic), the accompanying literature in the Bisoprolol packaging tells you you shouldn’t be taking it. I had this issue and the dizziness on 1.25mg, and my cardiologist took me off it.

Hope that helps and you find an alternative solution 🙂👍🙏

in reply to3MSF

it’s always below 60 will 80 percent of the time resting hr is around 50/55 . I haven’t even seen a doctor or cardiologist since the day I left hospital. Which was April 21 .

exactly same dose and experience of HR at 38 happened to me. I was also stopped from continuing with bisoprolol. Do you take anything now?

Dredd2000ad profile image
Dredd2000ad in reply tointheweeds

no beta blockers. GP said if I was older he’d replace it with something, but I was only 47 so he felt it unnecessary

My cardiologist wanted to increase my bisoprolol to 10mg from 5 mg as my hr was reaching 170 even whilst i was asleep, he said it was like i was at a gym. I agreed on 5mg in the morning 2.5mg at night as 10 mg wipes me out physically, and he tried me on digoxin as well, all going well on that for past year. Id give it time, or ask about another BB

Me too! I was on bisoprolol for tachychardia, but I felt like a zombie on it so moved to carvedilol and have been fine ever since.

k your doctor if you can try Nebivolol a far more refined beta blocker than Bisoprolol , i suffered with all of the side affects of Bisoprolol espescially light headiness, Nebivolol works amazing for me , i hope this helps

Just split the dose, am and pm. There is meds like entresto that i take that i told the doc i split the morning dose on many occasions so not to leave me drosey during the day. They were fine with it. Bisoprolol i am on a low dose of 2.5mg. They had me on 3.75 but my heart rate was so low at around 32-40 bpm and bp was low. She was like quick, we best put you back onto the 2.5 again.

But yes, ultimately its your body and you need to lead the way in a sense when it comes to taking meds and side effects.

Hi I was started on Bisoprolol a couple of years ago to lower hr.Didnt get dizzy but became very breathless on walking even to the kitchen. I used to walk 2 or 3 miles before. Was changed to verapimil and hr and BP nicely controlled.

I think it has that effect on some.

Originally, I used to take 3.75g twice a day which completely zonked me out. I now take 1.25g once and the difference is remarkable but I still get a light head occasionally..

I was put on Bisoprolol. I used to walk 3-4 miles no problem but found 1/2 mile too much and very short of breath. Tired out Doctor said stop tablets and it was like I’d been born again resting heart rate went back to 80 which is apparently acceptable on bisoprolol it was 60.

I was on Bisoprolol and I felt lightheaded, and always having a runny nose. I spoke to my doctor who said to stop it for 2 weeks to see if it made a difference. I was told to take them again after 2 weeks . The 2 weeks that I was off them I felt really good. When I went back on them I had the light headiness and runny nose again.. Doctor said it was my choice if I took them or not. Iv not taken them for 2 years now..

I was prescribed it in the morning, but it slowed me right down-no energy! So I take it at night and sleep well. If you are in bed asleep how do you know it makes you light-headed? Many heart attacks etc occur at night so I figure if my bp is low then I'm less likely to get one! Talk it through with the gP, and don;'t take no for an answer from the gestapo-(receptionists)!

surprising how bisoprolol causes side effects in some yet others have none. The med caused my body to break out in a rash. My cardiologist had no explanation. There must be others health variables that causes intolerance to bisoprolol.

Always take mine with my breakfast no problems ever. All the best have a good Christmas 👍

I was prescribed 2.5mg bisoprolol but it made me light headed on standing up so I split the dose 1.25mg morning and night. My cardiologist also told me to make sure I’m drinking lots of water and eating enough salt to keep my blood pressure up so it might be worth asking your doctors about that so they can advise you the correct amounts to help. I just have to remember not to stand up too quickly if I’ve been sitting for a while or if I crouch down - take it slowly!

Been on it for years. I think you're early into your journey with heart disease. I'd stick with it for a while ... and see how you feel. One thing that I find difficult is how most of us take a cocktail of drugs, how do people know which one causes symptoms, and how do people know that the symptoms aren't caused by something else?

Jaypan profile image
Jaypan in reply toFish4Info

Im fairly new to blood thinners so eagerly read about Bisoprolol because im One 1.25 a day to be taken in morning together with Apixaban twice a day. I do feel very light headed and giddy. I do have a meningeoma in the which affects the left side of face so thought the giddiness was caused by this. Though ive been asking to see a consultant for the Meningeoma ive drawn a blank. It would be really lovely NOT to feel giddy when im trying to cross a busy road or get up from a chair. Yes it is a case deciding what is causing what!

Fish4Info profile image
Fish4Info in reply toJaypan

Bisoprolol isn't a 'blood-thinner' but a beta blocker that reduces cardiac activity. Apixaban is an anti-coagulant (sort of like warfarin). Is this what you mean by blood-thinner? I think anti-platelet therapies like aspirin and clopidogrel are often called 'blood thinners'.

I'd have thought with a meningioma it's reasonable to expect consultant-led care, at least until the issue is fully diagnosed - isn't this rather likely to be a neurology-led diagnosis, rather than a cardiac-led one?

My main suggestion is to revert to your GP and discuss concerns, and agree some sort of action plan.

Good luck ... and I hope things sort themselves out.

Thanks for your reply, ive made a note of that. Because i dont fully understand what these meds do. The cardiologist dept said that my pacemaker was set at 60 and ive counted when i feel out of breath doing cleaning or gardeming my pulses trgisters only 60 but i have to sit down until the breething feels more normal again. I dont really understand it.

Hi. I am on 7.5 daily. I take 5 in the morning and 2.5 at night. I was light headed to start with, but it goes away. If you can persevere please do and don't reduce dose unless cardiologist says so. I have heart rates of below 55 early evening for few minutes but then it rights itself.
