tips for winter?

Hello so I asked for tips in the heat wave, so now I am asking how do people manage with the cold weather especially regards any impact on heart conditions / health issues. Any tips you can share noting fuel costs are going to be on everyone’s mind.

From BHF info it looks like it is important to keep warm and take extra care of ourselves, so any advice or tips gratefully received.

Last winter when just me home in day I would not put heating on to save money but I think this year with my raging angina I will re think that!

Thanks

Great post

Some utility companies are giving away free electric blankets/throws if you register as vulnerable and meet their criteria, apparently these are cheaper to run then turning on your central heating !! Worthwhile checking your utility company website for more info, I think you just need to complete a form. If not eligible then what about snuggling up to a hot water bottle, not too hot of course! Or maybe consider the heat pads you heat up in the microwave. It's all about heating the person rather than the space around you. Good luck

thanks will look into that. 👍

In the good old days you could have gone to Spain for the duration. Sadly as we are no longer European, this is now limited to 90 days.

How about New Zealand for the winter?

Last year my daughter bought me an electric throw for Christmas. It's cheap to use, back then it was 19p to use all evening, but I guess more expensive now. I use it afternoons.

My heating will be going on a lot once the temperature drops. One thing I'm never going to be is cold.

thanks will be looking into electric blanket. And yes I probably will use heating more, my angina comes on after walking a few metres so I don’t want any sudden changes in temperature to make it worse.

I can recommend the heat it gives out. I searched for ages, looking at allt he reviews then chose that one.

your right there Jean, don’t matter how much it cost I will not be cold

I use an electric throw that is amazing { so says the dog }

but seriously it really helps heat the body up and keeps it at a comfortable level.

I got mine from a well known online store, pretty cheap, but very effective .

Take care

great - electric blanket seems to be the hot favourite so far if you pardon the terrible pun 🤭

not for everyone but on really cold days (and there’s a lot of them in Scotland) I wrap up and go out walking. Stopping at coffee shop. Then golf club. You don’t have to spend much but you are warm and getting much needed exercise. After the first winter after surgery I invested in good walking boots and a quality waxed jacket can just walk as long as I can.

Hello :-)

Seems like electric blankets are popular the only other thing I can add is keeping your feet warm , I got lots of warm socks and always wear them when I am indoors as well as slippers

There is a saying we let heat out through our heads and feet and even though I do not fancy wearing a hat indoors I love my socks there are so many nice one's :-) x

in reply to

thanks socks definitely, might add a scarf now you mention loss of heat, but I’m the same about the hat! 😊

in reply to

Hello :-)

Yes a scarf could help to :-)

Wearing a hat indoors could be pushing it

One thing I have to be is warm so we will all have to brace ourselves when the gas and electric bills come in :-)

Hope you have a lovely day :-) x

I wear lots and lots of layers.

Heatech leggings, several long sleeved tops, cardigans, 2 pairs of socks and sit under a blanket. My dog is nice and warm too.

Hot water bottles, light the wood burning stove and keep one room warm. I leave the oven door open when finishing cooking.

Lots of warm drinks and soup. Porridge for breakfast.

My boots are lined with fleece liners. I wear a snood keeping my nose and mouth covered when going out. A hat is a must.

Silver threaded lining gloves from the Raynauds Disease society.

Excellent advice about keeping your nose & mouth covered so you're breathing in warm air, we were told this by my husband's nurse many years ago. The log burner sounds ideal, I may have to visit you as mine isn't being fitted until next Monday. I'm looking forward to toasting bread & crumpets over it, the way we used to do it when we visited Granny. 🍞 😋

i was just about to mention keeping your face covered in the cold, then noted Milkfairy has suggested it. Just to add that it could reduce your angina. If you take in cold air, this constricts the arteries, and the heart gets short of oxygen. QED Angina!

Work a treat outside.

noted! 😊 really helpful.

If you go out walking, make sure you wrap up, with hat scarf and gloves. I like long socks or thick tights under trousers.

Can you just heat one room rather than your whole home?

in reply to RufusScamp

I do need to wrap up more! I must admit not really ever got to grips with central heating, I guess I could turn down or off the upstairs radiators (in day time) and just have downstairs on, small house so easier to heat.
