Anyone got any tips to help with a horrible cold. I'm sorry to sound pathetic but ive had it over a week and its not improving. I have everything except temperature so its not flu . Chemist said i can only have stuff for throat. Cant get a docs appointment till next week. I was already feeling incredibly low as no one seems to listen to me. 12 weeks today since i had stent fitted but im still incredibly tired and still have pain in chest that i went to docs with in first place. Physio at rehab finally said it wasnt right and chased my follow up appointment as I hadn't been given a date. Turns out I wasnt on their lists. No record of me.... great... she made a fuss and I now have appointment thankfully. Sorry to digress ...

Sorry to hear you are having a tough time. Following 2 stents in April I also continued to have sporadic periods of discomfort in my jaw and throat mainly, which was my original symptoms. Do you have a gtn spray and if so does it relieve your pain. If not you should revisit your GP or A&E to be checked over. Does your local hospital have a chest pain clinic - the rehab Nurse will know if there is a clinic you can call them and ask if you can make an urgent visit. It's may be just be part of a settling in period with your stents but put your mind at rest and have it checked out. As regards to your cold yes on one hand it is a minor thing but does create a lot of discomfort and anxiety when you feeling a bit low. My remedies are to take regular paracetamol for a few days. Hot drinks of water freshly squeezed lemon and honey. Inhaling over a bowl of steam with couple of drops of Olbas or Eucalyptus oil 2 or 3 times a day can really help and proven to reduce the life of a cold. Keep well hydrated as you loose extra fluid with a cold. Lastly keep warm and maybe indulge yourself if possible for a couple of day with a good read film or whatever your interest is. Its a while since I had a cold but I get heavy colds if I have one think they are never going then suddenly you improve. Take care.

What medication is it that you want but can't buy in a chemist?

A cold will take as long as it takes and there's not much you can do to change things. Antibiotics won't help, but the endemic overprescription of antibiotics is a serious problem threatening us all,

It sounds like you've two issues, chest pain and a cold. Chest pain is potentially very serious and should be where your focus is, the cold is trivial and should be ignored.

If you are taking Bisoprolol, I think they can cause cold-like symptoms. Read the leaflets that come with your drugs, see if any of them mention it.

Hot drinks and plenty of them. Add honey and lemon if you wish - it’ll give you some energy. Take paracetamol for aches/pains and to lower temp if you have one. Keep warm and rest. Eat. Do not go to your GP as she/he won’t be able to give you anything to ‘cure’ it either (and all you do is spread the virus around some more).

Nathan 53 has the most useful advice and I would follow all of it. It does you good to moan and that's partly what this forum's for, to give us all support when we're low. Colds make you feel miserable so moan away!

All the very best to you. A spoon of honey every now and again works wonders. Good antiseptic properties! Good luck at the cardiologist on Monday. Mention your cold to him/her. It's amazing what they can advise! Let us know how you get on xxxx

Try Echinacea - it's herbal but has actually been acknowledged by the scientific world as being an excellent solution. Boots have it - I use the tablets which are blended with Goldenseal. Works for me.

All the best.

Hi, I was allways told to have plenty of warm drinks, I had a chest infection a few weeks ago, told to get plenty of rest and keep hydrated. 40 chi tea bags later and plenty of warm water with lemon. If you feel it's getting worse or not getting any better visit the doctor again. You have to be the strong one I know when you don't feel strong, cols are self limiting, chest infection needs antibiotics. Hope your feeling better soon.

Hot drinks as suggested. Don't take paracetamol etc for the symptoms, these lower your temperature to make you feel better. However the high temperature is due to your body fighting the bug, so paracetamol makes it last longer. This is the reason lemsip etc are banned in Scandinavian countries.

You might have to check if you can take this but I do a lemsip, added to this honey and slug brandy or whisky. Take it only at night and I usually sweat it out, sleep really well too. it works for me but you will need to check with pharmacist. Hope you feel better soon xxx

A heavy cold can be very uncomfortable, there's a been a few posts on here recently that are unsympathetic!! Pharmacists won't give my husband any over the counter products as he's on too much medication. I would ask the pharmacist what you can take as you may not be able to take some of the things mentioned here, ie lemsips & echinachea though herbal is very strong. Normally paracetamol, honey & lemon work it just takes time. However, definitely need to sort out your chest pain. Take care

It is best to take them when you feel the first symptoms. I take one or two a week during the winter months as a precaution and I have one a day for a week before flying anywhere - planes being the filthy things they are!
