Going away

Hey Everyone

I'm fairly certain I know you will all tell me to speak to the cardiac team and my gp, but my Mum wants me to go to Spain with her for a couple of weeks. She has a place over there and it's an area I know (fairly quiet and non touristy) I'm not back at work until November 5th (hopefully) and I don't have any appointments coming up.

Do you think I should?

i think checking with the professionals would be best.

But my overall opinion is depending on your condition and you feel up to it a change of scenery could be good for you before you go back to work. Obviously, I hope it would be a relaxing holiday hopefully not an action packed.

All I wouldmake sure you have insurance in place.

I know the advise forme was to wait for 6 weeks after my surgery and thee wary of DVT.

And from someone who is a teacher who thanks to the surgery missed all of the holidays and first bit of term. If you have an opportunity to rest, relax and prepare for going back to your job. Take it. Things will soon pick up again.

Hey

If my Mum is involved it will definitely be relaxing, she won't let me do any adventurous. It's a quiet part of Spain so no clubbing 😉

Part of me is looking forward to going back to school I love teaching, but I also don't miss the stress and the noise of all the kids

yes I have missed teaching too. Can't believe it's been a while half term. But the way I see it they'd rather have you back well rested and we'll than it be rushed.

I did a week then had a week off for funeral then I did a week and a half before my heart attack. So nearly 3 weeks before I went off

Hello :-)

Yes of course check with your GP and I hope it is a yes because I think that will be lovely as long as you do not kill your Mum over there :-)

It will be just what you need :-) x

Hey

When Mum is back in Spain she's a whole different person 😂 so I'm less likely to want to murder her.... Although it's still a possibility 😂😂

I haven't been back there for ages so I'd like to. I'll try and speak to the doctors tomorrow

in reply toValentina98

Hello :-)

Well that is a relief those odds go down when you and your Mum go to Spain :-)

It will be lovely for you and let us know what the Doctor says I really do hope it is yes :-) x

I will do.

I've not often gone to Spain with Mum, but she changes when she goes of talks about it.

Hello Valentina98. I can only speak for my husband. We asked our doctor (and the consultant) about a trip to Ireland 5 weeks after his quad bypass. It was a resounding 'yes - enjoy yourself'. We had no problems with insurance either but best to check.

I hope you have an amazing time. Lots of love. Jan xxx

I am hoping to take out life insurance on his mum. I think I have a good chance of collecting it!

In all seriousness a change is as good as a rest and a break might be a good thing

Hello :-)

Your reply made me laugh but I think you might have meant it for the poster and not me :-)

I wish I was going to Spain :-)

Hope you are keeping well :-) x

Yes I meant it for the poster. Are you and the family over covid now?

In addition to talking to your GP I would check out your travel insurance costs before you commit to see whether that influences your decision.

as long as your doctor thinks you are fit to fly and you have insurance then go for it. The warmer weather and change of scene will probably do you good. Xx

It might be warmer but it's raining just as much over there

Go, if you are fit (nearly) for work, then why not? I doubt you would het get insurance, but you should have your EHC (not sure thats what it is, its the health card from NHS), that will cover you if you need a hospital. The only thing it won't do is bury you or repatriate you, dead or alive 😂. If you can check with GP, fair enough, but you know your own body and limitations.

I can’t stress enough the importance of travel insurance. The Ehch card will only do so much. I have travel insurance with my bank and usually just activate it ahead of the holiday. This year I looked at the cover and i had lots of cover for cancelled trips and lost luggage but hospital stays, treatment and repatriation were not included. I ended up in 2 Greek hospitals and in two air aumvlances - one directly to Liverpool Heart and Chest hospital from Athens. Thank god I took extra cover and from now on , I won’t take it for granted that I’m covered.

I’m betting you won’t need it btw but can’t imagine my experience had I not had relevant cover

hola !

I’m in Spain as I type, on the east coast, on the Costa Callida. It’s not raining here, the temperature is perfect for me (mid twenties) and pace of life is great now the main tourist season is over.

Check with your GP, that will settle any worries you have.

I have a little plastic folder that I like to take with me when I travel containing a copy of my travel insurance with contact numbers highlighted incase of medical emergency and a copy of my last discharge letter from hospital outlining what I had done. I also have a list of my current medication - just having that information to hand makes me feel ‘organised’.

A holiday, good company and relaxation is the best medicine of all !

Hey

We'll be in Seville. It was raining there last night. Mum is was born there so we know all the places to avoid tourists even out of season.

I'm not sure on good company. You've clearly not met my mother 😜😅

Look and it as convalescence, rest, relax and take things very steadily, isn’t that the sort of thing the doctor ordered 👍

just make sure that your insurance company knows your full medical history!

I think you will need to check your travel insurance. When I had my CABG 21 years ago in the January we were due to go to New York in the April and the travel insurance company refused to insure me for heart issues.

Ssuggest you go.......after you insure yourself and update your EHIC.....Make sure you declare all your current medical conditions so you have peace of mind...and obviously get your Cardiologist opinion first. A notable Travel insurance firm advised me that, in the event of illness you will first be assesed* by the local public hospital before going private * free. The idea , I think, is to deduct the initial public treatment from the bill. Finally, it's a choice between your holiday and your life. Too many people are using the 'Go find me'...web site instead of insurance!!!!!!! Good Luck anyway..Wenlock.

Can I ask who you are insured with, please? I'm about to explore this area before undertaking trip to Australia next year - sounds a long time to go but I guess all the insurance 'jargon' may take a while to understand. Thanks
