newly diagnosed and pretty anxious

I have always had a heart condition but for most of my life it hasn’t had much of an impact.

Very recently I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation and since then I have had palpitations every day and for lengthy periods. I am doing my best to live with them but I’ll be honest I am finding it hard to think about anything else. Does anyone have any tips on the early stages and being able to get on with life? Thanks. Maz

Suprising you have not been prescribed medication to control the palpitations. I have had a couple of meds. over a few years. Now on Bisoprolol which helps enormously. There are other meds as well. to control palps and it depends on what else may be wrong with your heart or more generally with regard to your health as to what you may be prescribed.Ask for help. you do not need to suffer.

thank you for your reply. I’m sorry I should have said I am on bisoprolol 5mg which has controlled things until recently. But doesn’t seem to be working now. Have taken my Fitbit off so I don’t keep looking at it.

hi Maz. If you are having AF I would contact my GP and see if you need a change in your meds. My Cardio said they would prefer I didn’t get any AF at all. Palpitations are usually benign, but read

nhs.uk/conditions/heart-pal...

This clarifies (I think) the difference, and when to take action.

Good Morning. You will no doubt have thought about this, but I will mention it anyway. It may be worth giving up coffee/tea/any form of stimulant (coca cola?) to see if this helps.

Apologies if you have already done that.

thanks for mentioning it. I only drink decaf now so hopefully that will help.

Hi there , Does your heart rate go very fast when palpitating or just beat irregularly ? I ask as i was first put on bisoprolol which helped for a short while but then switched to flecainide as hr was irregular not fast.. and this has virtually controlled it for the last few months..i would talk to your gp or whoever prescribed you the bisoprolol about maybe changing meds...once its under control it makes it a lot easier to be less anxious over it...

thank you for your reply. I do have a fast hr, up to 140bpm which is around about half the time. I am seeing my gp on wed and consultant cardiologist on 17th Oct so will try and get more sorted
