Hi I had endocarditis last year, ending up with 3 months in hospital the infection came out of the blue. I had 6 weeks in hospital on antibiotics 6 times a day. Resulting after 6 weeks aortic valve replacement, & a bypass then another further stay of 6 weeks on antibiotics. This I think is the optimal time for killing the infection

Unfortunately January I collapsed then had a pacemaker fitted. In May the endocarditis returned 4 weeks in hospital antibiotics again through a mid line instead of a pic line & 2 weeks further every day in to hospital for more intravenous antibiotics. In May they didn’t find the infection through the toe. Camera but with blood cultures after about a week I felt fine since this my inr has been all over the place know injecting almost daily

I’m the worst case scenario (but also like most people on this forum the luckiest) I hope as you said, you will make a complete recovery without anything else, At least they’ve caught the infection early as it likes to hide

Good luck, & a speedy recovery, keep us all up to date

I am still recovering from OHS after getting Endocarditis. I was in hospital for7 weeks in total. The standard treatment is IV Benzyl Penicillin every 4 hours for 6 weeks. I also needed a mitral valve repair surgery this was done at the Brompton during that 6 weeks. Although I knew I had a murmur it hadn't been monitored through covid and since my last scan in December 2018 when I had a pacemaker fitted it had got significantly worse. I thought my lack of energy and stamina was just because i am getting old 🙄. I have follow up with the consultant next week and have just had blood cultures taken. Fingers crossed the Endocarditis had gone.

Note: there was no evidence of Endo on my heart valve when it was repaired.

hi. Im 51 snd had endocarditis for months before they found out what it was. I had sepsis after a mitral valve replacement and I think it stemmed from there. It led me to have a stoke although they didn’t identify that it was endocarditis until a month later. I was admitted to hospital in early dec 21 as I was seriously ill, my crp was 140 and I honestly was at deaths door. I had iv antibiotics for 6 weeks in hospital before they decided I needed a further replacement mitral valve. I was kept in isolation the whole time as I was so poorly. My first ohs was in sept 21 and the re do was done at the end of January 22. My heart was badly damaged by endocarditis and my op lasted 8 hours while they debrided and repaired the damage. After a week on further iv antibiotics in hospital I was sent home with 6 weeks of oral antibiotics. In total I was on antibiotics for around 3 months. Since January I’ve been tired but there is no sign of reinfection. I’m told that the first year after infection is when most reinfections occur although the risk is greatest within the first 3 months. I’ve had to push to get crp tests done as my gp doesn’t see the point if I am feeling ok but my feeling is that it doesn’t do any harm to check. Particularly as the infection nearly killed me and has left me with hf. There has been no aftercare really in terms of the endocarditis and no checks to see if it has returned. My gp just tells me that as I’m aware of the symptoms of endocarditis I should go to A&E if I experience them. The problem there is that endocarditis can mimic so many other illnesses and it’s not until you are seriously ill that it becomes clear what it is. I don’t want to scare you but before you leave hospital please insist that they put together a plan to ensure that you have blood tests, at least up until the 3 month point, to ensure that you are fully clear of infection. I’m so pleased that you are getting better but this is a very nasty infection and can creep up on you. There is a forum member called gimble who has had endocarditis twice (bacterial and fungal) and I hope that they will be along soon to advise you. If you want to chat please dm me or post, I’ll do my best to help. I really wish you all the best for a speedy recovery, I’m thinking of you. X

hi. Let’s hope that she is back to work soon and that you can get things sorted. It’s awful waiting for treatment but it’s great that you have someone you know and trust. I’m ok, just plodding along. My dentist has relented about the antibiotics so that’s good news. Small steps but progress nonetheless.

hope you are feeling better though. I had weeks of iv antibiotics and hated it. I was sick of having cannula’s in all of the time. Being in hospital can be pretty miserable but I hope that you are coping ok. Let us know how you get on. 😊
