Afternoon all. I was wondering if anyone can give any advice into the use of flecainide to treat arrhythmias. I have just finished a telephone consultation with an electrophysiologist who has suggested this drug alongside the bisoprolol I currently take - it's only 1.25 and I really don't think it's helping at all.
Currently my choices are learn to live with it (not very strong there) or try this new drug. Any experiences would be gratefully received.
Thank you.

I've no experience with flecainide, but it works in a different way to bisprolol.
Bisprolol is a beta blocker, it works by blocking adrenaline from acting on the heart. Doing this helps keep the heart rate low, and makes the heart's job a bit easier.
Flecainide is an anti-arrhythmic, it works by regulating how sodium and potassium work on the heart to help the heart maintain a steady, regular rhythm.
I know this wasn't what you asked, but I like to know how different medicine works in the body, I think it can help to make an informed decision... or at least prompts questions to ask the doctor if you are unsure. Generally, they won't recommend medication unless we need it, so I'd suggest going back to them with any concerns you might have.
Hi, if you hop over to the AF Association forum on HU and repost your question, you’ll find a lot of folk there who are on Flecainide and will be able to give you the benefit of their experience.
I have been taking flecainide 50mg for about two years. I tried coming off the medication after my ablation but my pre-op symptoms returned. From memory it a couple of weeks of being back on the medication before the symptoms subsided. So I guess my advice would be to take flecainide for a fortnight and see how you go. Good luck!
My wife’ has had AF for the last 2 years earlier this year she was put on flecainide it was fine at first then every time her heart went back into natural rhythm she fainted , once in the supermarket, the cardiologist stopped the flecainide immediately and recommended a pacemaker which she had fitted in June since then she has been fine she still gets AF sometimes but it keeps her heartbeat from going too low and the monitor keeps her in constant touch with the cardiologist, hope this helps oh by the way she is 81 l expect you are younger which might make a difference. Take care.
Thank you for replying. I know it's going to be different for everyone but really good to have other views on their experiences. Hope your wife remains well.
