appointment waiting time.

I was first referred to a surgeon at the Manchester Heart Centre by a cardiologist at Bolton back in March. I have severe MR. Since then I have had 4 appointments all of which were cancelled a day or two before the appointments. I am wondering if I eventually get to see a surgeon and he decides to operate, how much longer would the waiting time be for the actual procedure to be done. Presumably, if surgery is decided upon, it wouldn`t drag on. Or would it? What experiences does anyone have of Manchester heart centre waiting times please?

Why not ring the cardio appointments team and ask the question? You have nothing to lose. And the wait time for any surgery will be affected by whether any procedure has been classed as urgent or routine. Since you have already had four consultation cancellations my guess is you are classed as routine.

Hi. The waiting is awful. I waited about 5 months from my diagnosis of severe MR to my surgery. During this time I had the pre op stuff and a trans-oesophageal echo etc. I was told that I was a priority but there was a lack of itu beds which held things up. I wasn’t in Manchester but I think each heart center faces the same problems. I wrote to my surgeon asking him what the risks were of being on the waiting lists for months and he forwarded my letter to management. Following this I had surgery within weeks. I really hope your surgery happens soon. X

I’m in the same position as you. Referred from Fairfield hospital months ago. Was called to Manchester Heart Centre for a lung function test and had two follow up appointments cancelled. Next appointment scheduled for November. Referral is for severe MVR. Hope the next appointment goes ahead.

The repeated cancellations and long wait must be tough. I've no experience of Manchester, but regrettably (in general) it does seem necessary to keep making contact to chase up. If you can find a contact for a Specialist Cardiac Nurse in the relevant surgery team, they can sometimes be a really helpful point of call and help push things forward - they are easier to contact than busy Consultant Surgeons. Also can your Cardiologist help - if you've been classed as "Severe" what does he think about the risks of a 5-month wait already. If he can add pressure by putting on record his concerns, that should also help? Good luck
