stents for the elderly

Dad had a heart attack back in January. He's 88 yrs old. While in hospital he was offered to take part in a trial and have stents placed. He hadn't much time to think about it but decided not to have it done considering the risks attached. Following a reasonable recovery he's now started suffering tiredness and chest pain, having to use his GTN. Has anyone of a similar age any experience of stents or taken part in a trial?

Hi, not sure what the trial was but after my own heart attack I had stents fitted. I wasn't aware there really was any risk attached to having stents fitted. I know of a few older people who have had stents and gone on to live a good long time. I would get your dad to see his gp asap for the chest pain.

Not q uite in my 80s yet but had absolutely no hesitation at having stents fitted after a heart attack. Get your dad to see his GP about he pain. IT needs treating.

I had one stent fitted in 2013, open heart surgery for new aortic valve and single coronary bypass at age of 83. Now 3 years later, recent check up with cardiologist, he doesn’t want to see me for 2 years. I am so thankful that I have had the treatment when I needed it.

Do try and get someone to talk with your Dad, and reassure him how well he’ll be looked after during the procedure. Also such an improvement afterwards.

However we do have to respect a loved ones decision don’t we?

Best wishes to you both x
