Does anyone else fall asleep at the drop of a hat?

So I had a heart attack about 6 months ago and ever since I've been finding it difficult to stay awake whenever I sit down. I thought maybe it's just my age, but tonight I was sat watching telly after dinner with a cup of tea. Next thing I know half an hour has past and there's a warm wet feeling in my lap because I'd tipped the whole cuppa down my legs. Don't even remember getting sleepy, I was just gone. Thankfully I didn't burn myself, but don't really want to do that again.

I was told to feel sleepy after my heart attack, but I wasn't expecting it to be quite like this. Not sure if this is just part of getting old 😅 or I actually should be worried.

Hello :-)

This is quite common and I still do it now over a year later

I think it can be down to the medications we take but could be worth mentioning it to your Doctor and maybe some blood tests to check out your iron levels etc

But I think you will find and there have been many posts that this is something a lot of members mention :-) x

The same thing is happening to me after a heart attack. It was explained to me that fatigue was the norm and at age 79 I couldn't expect anything else.

I think BeKind is probably on the right track.I have not had a heart attack but have various heart issues and at 84 I am mostly very much still up and running. Maybe I have been lucky but at your age I was travelling to India and China and Europe beckoned me throughout my 70's including the mountains of Albania and Roumania.Clearly you need to pace yourself .Your energy will return.Go with the flow until it does.

I was 72 when I had open heart surgery. Yes I would go to sleep quite suddenly. Very soon learnt to put drinks, knives, food etc in a safe place.I need more sleep and at different times. So I spent several months getting the same sleep pattern. Then I could plan a reasonably active day.

Best wishes

Me 🙋‍♀️ most days. I'm worse in the evenings after 7pm, but if I sit down in the afternoons I sometimes nod off as well. I've also done the cup of tea in lap trick many times myself and my husband is even worse for it 😂 Don't worry yourself too much, but if it rests your mind perhaps speak to your doctor.

Stay safe x

Dear Carol1953

yup out like a light, as if someone has thrown the sleep switch, I have plenty of stained front of shirts to prove it.

I have amazing deep sleeps sometimes all night in bed or as short as a few moments in the chair, but all of them have vivid { luckily nice } dreams.

Its one “By product” of all this nightmare { no pun } that I can happily live with.

Take care

Hello Carol, it sounds like you are doing very well. I haven`t had a heart attack but often when I sit down in the evening I feel suddenly really exhausted and usually fall asleep for a few minutes, which perks me up a bit. Sometimes I feel to tired to go to bed. I am 76. I know age gets blamed for everything but after a heart attack I can well imagine these things happening to you.

My husband always said about his father falling asleep in the day. He’d had a triple bypass. Now unfortunately my husband gets the same from me 🙈. It’s got better but I still have the tendency to nod off but the dribbling and snoring I do usually wakes me up 🙈🙈😂😂. The main problem is that I end up missing the best part of a good program on tv.

Hello Carol, I can totally relate to this. I've had 2 minor heart attacks, since these, I like you I can easily just fall to sleep in the evenings. As Blue1958 comments, like a light being switched off. Not sure if it is the medication? I've reduced my working hours due to the fatigue and only work 2 days a week now. I can still go out like a light, one minute wide awake next in a deep sleep.

I've been known to fall asleep with my finger on a computer key, even before my heart-attack.I don't think it's tiredness, because it doesn't stop me sleeping at night. Might be the brain just wanting a brief escape from the world. I often dream, even in a short nap, so I take the positive view that some people spend a lot of money on recreational drugs for an experience like this.

Still annoying when you end up watching the same part of a TV show several times because you keep waking up when the adverts run.
