Has anyone had heart surgery and then gone on to be diagnosed with Hashimotos/ under active thyroid. I’m just looking to connect with anyone in a similar situation.

Thyroid problems, of which Hashimotos can be one, and heart problems can go together. I guess you are being prescribed Thyroxine for your underactive thyroid?Thyroid UK is a good organisation to be in touch with.

Hiya,

I have hashimotos and have a congenital heart condition which in the future will need surgery.

What surgery are you having?

Regards

Alison

Hi Alison, I had open heart surgery in 2020 to repair a hole in my heart . I have three other members of the family with the same condition. Two had open heart and one member just discovered her hole at 77 last year. What surgery will you need ?

Hi

I have a bicuspid valve and a mild aneurysm. I have had hashimotos for over 10 years and that's more debilitating than my heart especially when I have a flare I can feel very unwell.

Cheers

Alison

Hi Alison, Sorry to hear about the flare ups and feeling unwell. How often do you get a flare up? how long do they last ? I’ve not had one yet but it’s only been about five months with the diagnosis. I’m glad your heart doesn’t cause you any issues- it’s really good that you are aware and can have it fixed if the need arrives. I didn’t know until I was 46 there was an issue …to say I was gobsmacked would be an understatement. If I’d known I would’ve treated my body like a temple , not partying like a lunatic in my youth ( drinking, smoking etc) …lol Hannah

Hi Sorry I didn't see your reply.

If I get stressed or over work my body like hardcore physical I feel unwell.

Mine came on after giving up smoking. It runs in my family. I've had it for over 10 years.

I hope your surgery goes well and keep us posted x

Hi Alison, I had the surgery in 2020 and it went well , but thank you anyway. I quit smoking 10 years ago …so glad. Nobody in my family has Hashimotos , so I’m the chosen one . Stress is a real trigger for feeling un well , I have noticed that . Having physical limits is hard to get used to …I feel your pain. I’m sticking to yoga at the moment- only ten mins a day. 😊x

Thyroid problems can often be triggered by stress-I developed hyperthyroidism following the death of my father many years ago, which was Brough under control with meds, and I was fine for years, then I gradually became hypothyroid and now take thyroxine daily.
