Low heart rate - Bradycardia

I had heart surgery twice for an Ascending Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm in April 2019 twice and spent a month in hospital. I had bouts of Afib during my stay and was put on Amiodarone for around 4 months this was later changed to a small dose of Bisoprolol - 1.25 mg per day.

I was originally diagnosed in April 2017 and put on Losartan 20mg and aspirin 75mg. I've remained on all 3 plus Artovastatin and omneprazol.

Last year I had bouts of Tachycardia and I've had 2 further surgeries of 7 hours each to repair Cranial CSF Leaks ( a pretty rare condition). Bradycardia was mentioned on my notes by the anethesthatist.

Now I've always had a pretty low resting heartrate, probably around the mid 50's. But not normally that low when I'm up and about.

More recently though I've been having spells during the day when I'm up and about where I've felt light headed, tired, I'd say almost punch drunk. When I check my heartrate on my watch it's sometimes dropped as low as 48 - 50 bests per minute.

There doesn't seem to be any explanation for it. I eat normally and take plenty of fluids. Im 54, not overweight and i dont smoke, I very rarely touch alcohol and the last drink i had was a glass of wine with my Christmas Dinner!

Is this something I should be concerned about, and should I contact my Cardiologist? Cardiology seemed pretty happy with everything after my surgery.

I have a similar situation. Normal heart rate in the 50s but Nebivolol is knocking it down below 50 now. I don't have any problem with symptoms though.

Couldn't have put it better. Agree.

Morning cjbroon, thanks for sharing your post about having bouts of bradycardia. I too suffer with bouts of bradycardia also tachycardia and PVCs. I was diagnosed with mild lvh back in 2020 and put on bisoprolol 2.5mg but had no energy and dizzy spells so it was reduced to 1.25mg.

After having various test from mri, bloods, exercise test, ecg, echo, 24hr monitor etc I was told I had bradycardia with a rhr of 33 and mild mvp too.

Over the past two years I've had days being totally drained of energy and dizzy spells, twice in A&E once being blue lighted with a pulse of 30 but all tests come back ok. Cardiologist spoke to me in March and requested I stop bisoprolol straight away as this will lower my hr and he wants to see what my hr is without any meds so i now have a 3 day holter monitor fitted and have been told if I still feel dizzy and have a low hr he will look at fitting a pacemaker. Yesterday my hr was 41 and I was feeling a bit drained for about an hour then it passed and went back up to mid 50s/60s. Also blood pressure has been up and down too on Friday it was 158/103...banging headaches too.

I'm generally fit and healthy have an active job and up untill two years ago would go out on my bike each wknd covering 60 miles, im 50 years old don't smoke and like you don't drink since being told to stop 2 years ago.

I would check with your gp about being on bisoprolol as this lowers your hr and can make you feel fatigued too as he may request you go on something else but keep taking it until you speak to him. Keep pushing for answers you know your own body when things aren't right etc, fingers crossed you will get some answers soon.

Regards

I'm not in medication but my heart rate is normally at 46 bpm. When it drops to 42 or less then I get arrhythmias such as palps and ectopics.

Recently I have been getting what I think is Junctional Rythm when it goes too low. This is not a nice feeling at all as the atrials seem to do absolutely nothing.
