Thats interesting as I came up pre-diabetic on last annual blood test for the first time. I’m just awaiting the result of this years review. I had put it down to Covid as I also came up as anaemic although this year am not (touchwood).

Thank you for your reply. Cant be that as I dont take statins.

Statins are often blamed but the situation is not that simple. Research some years ago ago showed those thar were pre-diabetic and were prescribed statins developed Type II diabetes 6 - 9 months earlier than those who were not prescribed a statin. However, the majority can achieve a non-diabetic HbA1c by making lifestyle changes like aiming for and maintaining a healthy BMI, making dietary changes as appropriate what limiting carbohydrates intake to about 100 - 120gm CHO per day, and exercising after checking with GP.

I would strongly advise taking GP/dietary advice before changing your diet and cutting down on carbs especially, as the results can be just a concern as not taking action. I speak from my own experience this last year.

Hi, what do you mean? Never been diabetic used my husbands monitor as he has type2 diabetis. Just worried about sugar levels going up. Wondered if it was medication. Thank you for your reply.

I had a series of blood tests suggesting I'd become pre diabetic and I needed to make changes to my diet. Having discussed the type of changes needed with regards portion sizes, carb, sugar, fibre intake and the use of the GI index I started to make small adjustments as discussed. The plan being to check progress 1/4ly with appropriate blood tests before making further changes.

To cut a long story short, with the adjustments I made my weight plummeted to the point over a 6 month period I lost

1 1/2 stones sending the medical support into absolute panic. The most disappointing thing was I managed to achieve only a 1 point improvement in my blood glucose during this time.

Hospital referrals were made and investigations were thankfully clear of anything sinister.

3 months on and another 1/2 stone lost taking my bmi to seriously underweight.

Hospital dieticians are now involved with the instruction to eat more, have snacks, increase portion size and take prescribed drink supplements to try and regain the weight. The funny thing is, to try and regain the weight I'm now eating more food than I was before making the dietary adjustments, this whilst trying to ensure my heart health is good and my cholesterol levels are maintained.

I await my next blood tests to see where I'm at after my current diet has had 3 months to effect.

I haven't mentioned lifestyle changes as these have already been made to ensure my heart health is in as good a place as possible.

From my experience.

HbA1c levels can be distorted by many things, have them ruled out, something I'm now insisting my GP does/revisits despite asking the question on 4 previous occasions. Like the original poster I'm on omaprezole which is known to effect absorption of certain things.

Post surgery Iron levels was another one I specifically asked about as mine were low at the same time as the pre diabetic diagnosis.

Not all those diagnosed with pre diabetics needs to loose weight as such make SMALL agreed measured changes to your diet via input from GP practice or hospital DIETICIANS. All whilst having the monitoring 1/4ly glucose blood tests to ensure changes to lifestyle and diet are having the desired effect.

I was pre-diabetic and overweight, together with raised BP and cholesterol. The GP prescribed an ACE and a statin but otherwise I followed this advice. I am no longer pre-diabetic or overweight. Also my BP meds have been reduced. Your story shows how we are all different.

in reply to Heythrop51

Exactly that, and that's why we need to obtain the proper advice from the specialists and ensure the proper monitoring is in place as changes are made.

I have been a Type I diabetic for most of my life and am on a similar combination of heart drugs; Lansoprole, Lisinopril (an ACE Inhibitor rather than Candesartan which is an ARB), Bisoprolol and Aspirin. None of these affect my BG (blood glucose). Atorvastatin also has no effect.

You do not say what your BGs or HbA1c results are. Besides an elevated BMI, poor diet and lack of exercise the other major risk factor is age! When I spent a period in a care home around 50% of the residents were diabetic.

Reminds me when I was in hospital recovering from my bypass, a nurse seemed surprised when I said I was not diabetic 😁.

I was v surprised to be told I had just crept into pre-diabetic range just after my Stemi HA in Feb. Normal Bmi, weight, non smoking occasional drinking fit and active person, was then sent all this bumph on changing dietary habits. I managed to see my GP (in person yaaay), who coincidently had a prescribing Pharmacist sitting in, and just asked directly what I should do.... heart dietary advice for me was, avoid bad fats and eat carbs etc, but for diabetes, eat fewer carbs and increase the fats, the two really didn't mix that well and when you're recovering from these life changing events, contradicting advice really doesn't help! Doc said to ignore the diabetic info and concentrate on healthy heart & we'll revisit the blood tests later...
