Water retention on holiday in Lanzarote

After manoeuvring my way through Travel Insurance/Special Assistance/hiring wheelchair as I have AF and heart failure. On the 2nd day I seized up completely with Sciatica and had to be wheeled to the nearest clinic to be left after 3 injections and £400 bill which was worth it Will try and claim some back but not confident😱my question is my Spanish is not good but I recognised diclofenac and flogoprofen in 3 daily injections.

Since then the pain has subsided but I am now retaining water even tho I am on furosemide 40mg daily but took 2 yesterday but still very little output I do sweat and drink plenty but I'm here for another 3 days so am scared of my body getting waterlogged.

Hoping to hear soon with advice please x

Sorry to learn that you are in a predicament in Spanish holidays. None of the injections can cause fluid retention. You did the right thing by taking 80 mg of Furosemide as once only dose and 40 mg as a maintenance dose. Have you ever been given Spironolactone say 12.5 mg as it is diuretic but retains potassium. Ask your medic if you can take that in addition. Regards.

Thank you for your reply I am currently taking Spironolactone 12.5mg so hopefully the fluid will start to flow!! ¿

Are you taking in more salt than usual? Did you eat on the plane - they use a lot of salt - or eating out a lot? If so, could be contributing to your problem.

Probably as I know everything high salt contents took our own food on plane. Of course you're right about eating out. Luckily my water output has increased after doubling tablets. Thanks for the tip on every other day though. Last day tomorrow x

Dear Zaramac1

Well that was a bit of a downer for your holiday, but glad that at lest you have a few more days of warmth on your body.

The way you are using the water tablet is the same as my Heart nurse told me to do with my “blow up” times, 40mg one day, 80mg the next and keep alternating that till I had deflated.

This is of course is just for me and as I’m not medically trained I cannot tell you to do it {you already are} but if you have good Wi-Fi there {presume you have to be able to tell us your tale} then contact your Heart nurse/team for advice.

Enjoy the rest of your time.

You might try limiting your fluid intake - which I know is not easy in a warmer climate. And cut out salt or reduce it. Definitely agree you’ve done the right thing doubling your Furosimide. You could go to a chemist - I always find the chemists on the continent are able to suggest things that you have to see a GP here for. (If you can of course.) We had a lovely holiday in Lanzarote just before the pandemic started and are going back next February.

I was told to take more fluids from HF nurse luckily as I drink loads I suppose it is dependent on the individual x

Well your HF nurse knows a lot more than I do so just ignore me! I had to severely limit fluids for quite a while until my levels got to where they should be, but it’s very hard. Hope you feel better soon.

hi there

Hopefully you got better and returned home safely.

If not too personal could I ask what travel insurers you used?

Many thanks
