Fluid retention.

Has anyone experienced resistance to diuretics? My furusamide stopped working and I'm now on bumetanide which is better but I still feel bloated and my weight is not moving up or down. I've increased my intake of fluids advised by h.f. nurses. Any tips would be appreciated.

Try spironolactone plus toresemide which is a potassium sparing loop diuretic after consulting the cardiologist please

I have not seen a cardiologist since I was taken into hospital 18 months ago. That maybe my problem. I'm looked after by g.p. and h.f.nurses. I have been thinking about having a private consultation. It would be so good to have more than 10 minutes and be able to explain fully in one go what is happening.

Till such time you meet the cardiologist, maintain fluid restriction and less salt to avoid sudden wake up from sleep and suffer from shortness of breadth (PND)

Hi Love100cats.

Your HF nurses should be able to arrange a cardiologist appt for you.

The nurses are experts in their field (though obviously done are better than others! have you spoken to your nurse about the increased meds not helping? Sometimes, it needs a hospital visit to drain the excess fluid, again they should be able to help with this.

Best wishes

I have an appointment in March with nurses. They have seen me since the problem started post blood test with very high BNP reading which indicated heart failure (worse than usual) with AFib much worse and heart rate 110. I have had one phone call from them and nothing from g.p. though I have repeated blood test. It's hard when you are living alone and feeling so exhausted to keep chasing these things. That's not a moan but just reality. I have a deadline by Friday to sort it out.

Are you able to phone them? Yes, it must be hard to deal with it on your own & you've had enough to deal with already

Yes. I'm going to start tomorrow with asking for a call from g.p. re last blood tests then discuss with her having a private consultation. I know she is the one to refer.

Initially I was put on Furosemide, it ran out over one weekend (of course) and I am so rural so makes things difficult. Decided to check if there was any DIY option. I was barely peeing at this point and could feel effects on my kidneys (pain). Found: black tea (just the ordinary type), tried it and it worked a dream down to the caffine. Worth a try.
