Muscle tiredness

I’m 9 months post HA and Triple bypass and take Aspirin, Atenolol, Atorvastatin, Bisopralol, Clopidogrel, Omeprazole and Ramipril. I’m a Tyle 1 diabetic but I consider myself to be fairly fit again. My blood pressure is quite low having been very high post op but I’m in talks with GP about this. When I’m out walking my legs just won’t get going. I try to walk faster and for longer but I struggle. My brain and body want to move but my legs don’t. I can walk 3 miles but it’s an effort. I’m wondering if it’s anything to do with medication.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi sewing19. Just wondered what dose of bisoprolol you are on? About 6 months or so after my heart attack I was was recovering well, but felt so tired. After reading about it I wondered if it was the bisoprolol and asked my advanced nurse practitioner if I could try reducing it. After speaking to the consultant she agreed to halve my dose and I noticed a big improvement.Strangely I have been very tired again lately and plan to ask my GP.If it would be possible to try reducing the dose again. Not sure if this helps, but hope you can sort something out. Best wishes x

Thank you. I’m on 1.25 Bisoprolol but will check with Gp. I feel tired all the time. Not like me.

For me it was the bisoprolol made me feel like a zombie including getting my legs going!! I reduced it on gp rec & am now training for a 50k walk on my anniversary in April!

As others have said, Bisoprolol can induce tiredness. Atorvastatin can also affect the leg muscles. After trying three statins, my GP decided I had to come off them as they inhibited my exercise. Following consultation with the Clinical Pathologist at the local hospital, I was persuaded to try Rosuvastatin on alternate days and after a two week bedding in period, all was well. I'm now on it daily.

Hi Sewing 19, I found the atenolol gave me side effects! Also you should speak to your Dr re taking omeprazole and clopidogrel they interact , the omeprazole reduces the effects of clopidogrel.

Thanks for your replies and suggestions. I’ll speak to my GP about Bisoprolol. Xx

Dear Sewing 19

I think that all of your symptoms could be down to the drugs you are on. But you need your dr to confirm this as there maybe something else at play, so better to get that ruled out.

I followed similar things to you and cutting a long story short I was found to be very anaemic.

You are also similar in the fact that it has only been 9 months since your op, as I’m constantly being told ‘ Its not that long ago ‘

Take care and I hope that you get sorted out soon.

Strange you say that about anaemia because my iron is at the low end of normal and I did question nurse about it at my diabetic review last week. Also BP is low ish so she spoke to dr who suggested a week of BP readings and bloods again in a month .

Bisopralol did that to me. I was literally dragging myself about. It was changed to Candesartan but was no different so mine was stopped and deemed unnecessary

I was started on 80mg of Atorvastatin after my HA. I could hardly walk up any inclines. My GP changed it to Pravastatin at a lower dose which was only slightly better. I complained and he changed it to Simvastatin and it was still no better. He gave up and prescribed me Ezetimibe, but that had zero effect on my cholesterol.... bearing in mind they were trying to get me lower than my norm of 4.4. I changed from statin to statin, so can't say how long it took to clear any aches, but I think I was well clear after a couple of weeks. I do get fairly rapid effects when medication is started and stopped, so have to be very careful if anything new is prescribed.

I had a bypass op the following year. I was persuaded to try Rosuvastatin on alternate days. I had no issues with the legs, but had a headache or a couple of weeks. In the first couple of months it took my cholesterol down to 3.6. However I was back to 4.0 last year, so I asked to take it daily and I now await the results of further blood tests as part of my annual monitoring.

On separate issue, I was also put on 3.75mg of Bisoprolol after my HA. This caused severe hypotension when I stood up. I almost passed out several times. With the agreement of the Pharmacist, this was reduced to 1.25mg, which is more than enough for me.

As for exercise, I walk 3 or 4 miles several times a week, plus other physical jobs, gardening, etc. Occasionally I go on longer walks, time allowing. Recently I walked 17 miles in 5 hours, non-stop. I love hill walking and went up to Scotland several times last year, doing a couple of Munros each time. I'm now 70 years of age.

I hope you get sorted out with your medication.

Gerald
