I have heart failure and take meds. to keep my heart and lungs free of fluid. But I still have a problem with belly water/fat. am quite lean and exercise regularly .Not sure what you can do.I would love a nice flat tummy.

Dear Masters69

A big warm welcome to you here, I hope you find this site as helpful and as supportive as I did.

Well the old belly fat? Or is it water? You need to speak to your Dr/ heart team and check if your meds are causing this. I am on water tablets as I can blow up like a ballon and I am quite lean.

If its a medical problem or a drug one these have to be addressed first,

if after you have checked this { important } and it is indeed just fat then I found that twisting and sit ups { boring } helped, Planking { look it up } gave me back a firm stomach , but it ain’t easy going.

All exercises must be put through your GP or Heart team, one of my goto favourites was using a hanging bar, for little work it showed the most results fast. But I can’t do them again yet.

Dynamic tension I have been doing since a teenager worth a look at, again good gains.

Take care Masters69, I hope your journey is a safe one.

My rehab physio told me not to plank as I have an ICD, and the effort required to plank for any length of time might make the device think I'm in trouble and shock me! I took her advice. And still have a stomach :)

Most fat on stomach is hormonal in the sense hormones tell your body where to store the fat. Insulin is responsible for fat storage. Cut down on foods that spike insulin such as refined carbs, sugar and processed foods. Spot exercise can not slim down an area. It can firm up muscles under the fat but that’s it. Eating a low to moderate carb diet will support weight loss. Carbs eaten should be complex slow release carbs such as lentil, beans, brown rice and bread. Good luck.

Vegetable only diet for 10 Days did it for me. Hard work but worked !

I found a low carb diet helps me control fluid and I don’t get the same build up. I am allowed to choose my dose of Furosemide accordingly and have just had a week completely off it without any fluid build up. But of course, I would advise you to check in with your doctor about changing doses for you.

I have been amazed how this has made a difference.

I decided to go all in and do Dr Moseley’s Fast800 to get rid of excess weight and it has been brilliant all round.

in reply toDiddyd

I’ve been looking at the Fast 800 myself. I have gained a lot of weight since HA in August 2020 and blew up like a balloon … dreadful pain in legs and ankles due to very high dose of Atorvastatin …. Sorted now and no longer in pain and thankfully no longer blown up. However can’t shift fat gained around my middle. I’d be interested in hearing how you’re finding the Fast 800 and how well it’s working ??

Lost 1stone 4 pounds in 5 weeks

800 calories a day seemed horrific but the meals are delicious and I have not felt hungry once.

I went back to SW and lost nothing in months; I worked with a nutritionist and list nothing; I worked with a personal trainer and lost nothing so this really does work and I can recommend it.

I joined the online version so you get daily exercise and meditation to do as well if you wish.

Worth trying

in reply toDiddyd

Thank you for getting back to me regarding this. That’s a strong testament in favour. I will join the online version and prepare myself. What a difference losing even one stone in weight would make to me !!! Thanks again 🌹

There are diets and diets, which one are you on? If it low fat, that may be your problem, consuming fat doesn't make you fat, carbs and sugar do. What exercise do you do, tightening stomach muscles will help, situps, dumbells, etc are good.

Hi Dave i follow the diet given by dietician as suffer from a number of medical conditions I walk 3 miles daily squats sit ups etc

3 miles a day sounds great and the other stuff too, maybe you are not destined to have the body you had years ago, just keep up the good work. I find I lose muscle tone in days if I stop.... anyone know anything about eternal youth?

I looked the fast 800 diet up just now. I suggest anybody thinking about it should read this BBC article first.

Useful link that thanks. I read through it and realised that there is no way I could attempt it. 2 to 3 litres of water a day - LOL - that is a dream. Due to HF I am on restricted fluids 1.5 litres a day. Not recommended for people with a heart condition - so that rules us all out. Not if you are on warfarin - I don't know if that is warfarin specific or if it includes us who are on edoxaban. The list goes on. I guess many of us must stick to the slow more old fashioned ways of slow weight loss

I agree rizal, also many people have put on a few covid pounds, me especially 🤔😅, but slow is the answer to long term success. Besides, I have also read that a few extra pounds later on in life can be good for you. Always a bright side to every argument 🤣🤣🤣👍

Its very unlikely you'll lose belly weight that's due to water retention. Are you on any diuretics? If you're retaining fluid you will probably need to start taking a diuretic or your meds may need tweeking

Masters69 profile image
Masters69 in reply toLezzers

I was on water tablets for some reason my gp took me of them.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply toMasters69

If you're still retaining water you should still be taking diuretics. Are you under a cardiologist or heart nurse, if so I would speak to them about it. If not go back to your GP. Our GP stopped/reduced some of my husband's medication, he also has heart failure, his cardiologist wasn't very happy and said if the GP does that again to contact him & he'll sort it!

Thanks i will speakTo my go again cardiologist discharged me because they cannot put stents due the blockage in artery very close to the heart. I have take Medication for life.

Similar story to my husband, his heart condition is inoperable but his medication has been doing a great job for the last 20+ years. Can I ask when you were diagnosed with heart failure and if you've ever been referred to a HF nurse?

Masters69 profile image
Masters69 in reply toLezzers

2017 x ray showed I had enlarge heart my go said it was heart failure after a echo I was told diagnosis was incorrect and the x ray May have just showed a shadow. Over time my symptoms where pointing towards heart failure in 2019 I decided to get 2nd opinion with stress test and angiogram I was diagnosed with Connery artery and enlarge heart. The took the reports to my gp who referred me to cardiologist my appointments have been over the phone due to Covid. Cardiologist said the same medication for life tween my medication and discharged me. I do not have HF nurse but I get the sense they did not like me getting a 2nd opinion.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply toMasters69

Hi, your reply isn't showing probably because you mentioned the C word!! You are perfectly within your rights to get a 2nd opinion and as time has shown you were right in getting one.

Under NICE guidelines you are entitled to be referred to a HF nurse if they're available in your area. If you check out the Pumping Marvelous website it shows you how to check if they're in your area. If they are then ask your GP for a referral, especially as you are retaining water. You might want to also phone the HF nurses and ask advice, I've done that before.

Good luck 🤞 please let us know how you get on.

Hi lezzy my gp prescribed me water tablets after the results of my echo last week. My results came back left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (Xaj99) she has referred me back to cardiologist unfortunately not had any joy finding HF nurse yet.

Lezzers in reply toMasters69

Glad to hear your GP is in board, unfortunately that's not always the case! Sorry done know what Xaj99 is!! Did your gp refer you to a nurse?

Masters69 profile image
Masters69 in reply toLezzers

Hi lezzer My go has referred me back to cardiologist. My only concern is only spends 5 mins consultation no examinations or test and discharges me this has been happening for 2 years now. It feels as the cardiologist is not interested I did ask my gp to refer me to different cardiologist but seems to be same person.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply toMasters69

What caused your heart failure as this usually determines what tests are required and how often. The reason why I ask is because my husband was diagnosed with HF in 2012 and has only had one echo since then, the reason given is it wouldn't change how they treat him. However, he now have worsening HF symptoms so he's currently waiting for another echo. I've also pushed for an angiogram as he's not had one for over 20 yrs but they've said they'll do a myocardial profusion scan and wait for those results before considering an angiogram.

I would suggest having list of all your questions ready and ensure your questions are answered. Don't feel rushed and if you're not happy afterwards tell the consultant you'd like a 2nd opinion, your GP will always refer you back to your original consultant.

I take diuretics to control fluid retention and have to keep a record of my weight every morning. If it changes by a couple of kilos in a few days I have to phone the cardiac nurse. I would definitely mention it to your gp or cardiologist just to be on the safe side.
