Nebivolol or bisoprolol

If anyone has changed beta blocker please let me know how each affected you. Having a bad day today on bisoprolol off balance s.o.b . New to them only been 2 weeks but no better other than the palps have gone. Also getting fatigue and generally feeling unwell. Got phone appointment with cardio consultant next sat and then weeks of waiting for holter monitor. Thank you to all who replied to my previous post on BHF but now just need to hear from anyone who changed bisoprolol for an alternative and how symptoms changed. Many thanks.

I was on Biso 7 years ago but soon came off them due to feeling dizzy.I have now been on Nebivolol 2.5 for nearly 3 weeks - so far so good.

Thanks ....good to hear they've worked for you. Makes you wonder what causes the dizziness.

They lower your blood pressure / heart rate too much?

I have only been on Bisoprolol 3 weeks and they make me feel awful, doctor has just prescibed Nebivolol so fingers crossed they will work for me

Hi celticlady, I could not tolerate Bisoprolol due to chronic nausea and some vomiting. I was put on Nebivolol instead. I was told by the doctor to be careful as it can cause my blood pressure to go too low. I am on 1-25 so have to cut the 2.5 tablet in half which the pharmacist said was fine. It does take a while to get the balance right. Although I still get a little nausea, the Nebivolol is better for me. I have spoken to my doctor throughout these changes so hope you are able to do the same. Take care, Judi

Thank you again Judi. I find the s.o.b light headed stuff really difficult to cope with ...did you get that?

Heyjude31 profile image
Heyjude31 in reply tocelticlady

I did get that if my blood pressure went too low., particularly first thing in the morning. I do take the Nebivolol in the evening with my evening meal. My blood pressure is better then, so it tends to work for me. 😊

Thank you. I'll ask the cardiologist next sat about all this maybe there's something I can take for palps but not BP. Stay well x

Heyjude31 in reply tocelticlady

Hi, if you get a option for that, please let me know. I don’t have a problem with my BP historically, but have been kept on the tablets for BP and heart rate. It would be good to know if there is an alternative, something that is kinder to the BP. Take care, Judi

Hi celtic lady...Im one of those too!! My cardiologist changed me from bisoprolol to Ivabradine 2.5mg. These are much better. I gained 20kg and got kidney stones thanks to bisoprolol. Look up a group called Bisoprolol Buddies on Google. You will learn a lot! It appears to me to be a quiet little nasty!! Cheap, thsts why we all get it after h.a. Also my cardiologist said he doesnt think betablockers are good longterm. I was on it 4 yrs! All the best x

rupes5 profile image
rupes5 in reply toTricia7048

That's interesting. I have been on Bisoprolol for approx 9 years and have just discovered I have a kidney stone. Also I am having AF more frequently and have been advised to double my dose, so maybe it's not as effective long term.

Tricia7048 profile image
Tricia7048 in reply torupes5

Look up 'rare side effects of bisoprolol' and you will find that 'excruciating back pain from kidney stones ' is one of them! My cardiologist confirmed this and changed me to Ivabradine. To my surprise, Ive been ok since I changed and they were getting worse before I did! I would, personally, be so worried about doubling the dose! I dont honestly understand why, if docs think something works, do they think twice as much will be better? I hope you can get an answer re changing your medication and stress your kidney stone problem. All the best!

celticlady profile image
celticlady in reply toTricia7048

Thanks Tricia...trying to get to the bottom of why the bisoprolol is so bad and what it is about neviprolol that is ok. If both lower BP thereby causing dizzy light headedness can't understand why one is so much better for side effects. Will ask cardiologist on Saturday and hope he is knowledgeable as some can be dismissive re meds. I have bad reactions to some vit tablets so got no chance on stronger meds!!

I could not tolerate Bisoprolol and was taken off it. It was a while ago and I believe it was because it made me cough. I was put on Losartan which I have since been told to stop as my blood pressure became too low.

How different we all are! I came off Losartan as I had an irritating cough, I am on Bisoprolol just 1.25 mg which I take at night, and apart from fatigue seems to be ok, BP and pulse steady. I had replacement aortic valve and single coronary bypass in July 2019, then

Hi Celticlady, I was initially put on Bisoprolol and it made me feel absolutely dreadful. I was changed to Nebivolol and have now been on them for 2 years. I have low blood pressure, so can only tolerate 1.25ml daily which I take in the evening, but I seem fine with that.Hope this helps. Every good wish for the future xx

Thank you. Does it come in at 1.25? I thought just bisoprolol was 1.25 dose .

No, it just comes in 2.5 so I have to cut the tablets in half.

I was on 10mg of Bisoprolol for about a year, just felt so lethargic and breathless. Changed to 5mg Nebivolol, didn't feel that much different. 6 months ago told to halve the tablet, what a difference! Not so breathless and more energy. I'm assuming my BP and pulse rates were too low. No issues with the Nebivolol. Good luck!

Why does Bisoprol , get such bad press , I take 10 msg morning and 2.5 at night , have been on that for 9 yrs , never had a problem , and seem to be surviving after two close calls .I have heard people say only take for a year, others who feel Unwell on a miniscule

Dose. It’s kept me alive , fairly fit and active for years .

I would recommend Biso.

Hello, I was on Bisoprolol for around 10 months to treat initial SVT diagnosis but later diagnosed with A.F I was breathless/tired and low Pulse [41/45bpm] and my heart didn't like over exertion of any kind [ie working/walking] and it didn't stop flutters/surges/dizziness/inconsistent bp so after my second appointment with Cardiologist I was changed on to Sotalol. Pulse rate still low/get occasional light headedness when standing up and it's controlling fluttering/surges] better than the Bisoprolol but still finding it difficult to keep active daily due to palpitations. Hope you find it works for you. Take care.

celticlady profile image
celticlady in reply todogsneedwalking

Thank you for replying. It's early days for me so will hopefully have a better idea after cardio consultation. It's the dizziness/head surges that really bother me. I was dizzy etc before Bisoprolol but didn't get the surges. Fortunately the palps have stopped so will enquire re meds that stop palps but don't affect BP if that exists. Hope your symptoms improve I'm surprised the BBs haven't helped with the palpitations. Take care.

I've got an awkward heart lol. Adenosine, etc doesn't work for me so had to have cardioversion last time. I seem to be caught in a loop just now. I just need to work out my limitations as to exercise, etc. Let us know how you get on with the Bisoprolol.

I was on Bisoporol for a couple of year. I never fully got used to it - mainly fatigue. Last November, after a bout of SVT, I changed to Sotolol. The fatigue has gone!

Agree with others. I was on bisoporol for 6years and always suffered side effects. Eventually was changed to Nebivolol and for me it is huge improvement.

I’m 48 and was put on Bisoprolol for AF. They didn’t agree with me either just felt more unwell so they swapped to Nebivolol and I’ve had no symptoms with that.

celticlady profile image
celticlady in reply toYellow_star

Thank you... what exactly were your symptoms on bisoprolol?

Yellow_star profile image
Yellow_star

To be honest, it was March 2020 and I had a virus which I’ve no doubt was Covid. My heart started racing and that’s when I was put on the medication. So when I was put on Bisoprolol I had a constant post nasal drip which had me choking a lot but thinking back it may have been the virus and not the Betablocker. I also had dizziness and feeling a bit spaced out. I definitely felt better when they changed to Nebivolol.

celticlady profile image
celticlady

Thank you for all replies. Please be specific about any negative symptoms re BBs. Will update when I have solid results re diagnosis....could be AF so have to wait now for all tests. Fortunately in Leeds we have a large cardio unit.

Hi Celticlady. I had a mild HA last May and was put on Bisoprol, among other things. Saw cardio last month; told him I didn’t think I was healing as well as I could be. (This was after second stent in November.) He said it could be the Bisoprol as it lowers the heart beat. He asked if I wanted to change but I thought ‘better the devil I know’. I’m seeing him again in the autumn, when I’ll ask for Nebivolol. I have two stents, walk every day but get palpitations and exhaustion. All very scary.

celticlady profile image
celticlady in reply toHarefieldfan

Thank you. I thought all beta blockers lowered heart rate....if anyone knows about this pls advise as I'm new to the heart symptoms so really appreciate any information/anecdotal experience. I've noticed today BP is higher as been busy indoors...I think when low and slow HR it brings in a weird head surge. Glad the palps have gone and yes it is all scary...best wishes.

Harefieldfan profile image
Harefieldfan

Yes they do. My resting rate is 58 bpm, down from 72 pre-Bisoprol. Goes up to 68 during cardio walk.

I was swapped from bisoprolol because even the lowest dose (1.25mg) was making me incredibly dizzy and getting neuropathy to Nebivolol 2.5mg then the cardiologist added Ivabradine 2.5mg twice a day in too because the Nebivolol was lowering my blood pressure but not my heart rate. I do have swollen ankles but not sure if that’s a Nebivolol side effect or my heart just not pumping so well.

Biso Has Been An Effective Med For Lowering Blood Pressure & My Heart Rate. However, The Side Effects Are TERRIBLE !* When I Approached My Doc About It 2 Years Ago. He Actually Acted Angry & Irritable With Me For Even Bringing Up These AWFUL Side Effects. He Pointed At My BP Reading And Sad," THIS Is ALL That Matters & The Side Effects Did NOT". He Stormed Out Of My Exam Room & Left Me There With A Nurse To Lead Me To The Desk To Make My Copay, Then Sent Me Home. I Told The Nurse. Oh Well. I Guess ALL The Information They Tell You To Share With Your Doc Can Be Just Thrown In The Trash As Useless. She Shrugged Her Shoulders, Threw Up Her Hands, & Said, " I'm Sorry". I Suggest You Make Sure Your Doc Is Actually Acting Like A Doc When It Comes To Beta Blockers or/ Find A New One.

I am 66 and had a heart attack 5 years ago. I also had 3 episodes of paroxismal aFib in the last 3 years. I am otherwise in good health and excellent physical condition. I have been on 2.5 mg bisoprolol daily for over 3 years and discussed changing it with my cardiologist because I was worried that my heart rate was too low (below 50 resting and 42 sleep). I had no other issues (e.g. dizziness, low BP, etc.). In her opinion these HR values were just fine but she agreed to replace bisoprolol with 2.5 mg nebivolol daily. I have been taking nebivolol for close to two months now and nothing has changed. My HR is still roughly the same and I still feel no side effects.

Hi, I was on bisoprolol for 25 years, I was suffering from anxiety and depression at the time and also had’ white coat’ syndrome. Not sure my BP was ever high except when the dr took it. I didn’t really get any side effects except difficulty when climbing hills or many stairs though I did suffer from a runny nose at times but never made the connection. Two years ago I made the decision to come off the BB. I had been on 5 mg so cut down over a few weeks with my dr grudging help! Two years later and I still get flutters not really palps as my heart dosent race. I can’t help feeling all those years of taking Bisoprol have caused this, after all my adrenaline has been surpressed for such a long time. My dr thinks it’s all anxiety as I’ve had clear ecg x2 halter monitor and blood tests. I just think the bisoprolol had caused the problem with the flutters. Just be careful and don’t take it for long unlike me!

I had been taking Bisoprolol 10mg alongside 5 other drugs since I had an Aortic Dissection in August 2019. My blood pressure stabilised at close to 120/80 through 2020/2021.However I experience a mild stroke in Jan 2022 and spent 9 days in the Stroke Unit of my local hospital. My Consultant Neurologist changed my cocktail of meds and reduced Bisoprolol to 2.5mg and eliminated another beta blocker as my BP had been low in hospital. Unfortunately within a couple of weeks my BP rose to 190/100. My GP has been adjusting the meds and I have graduated to Bisop 5mg and reintroduced Amlodipine Teva 10mg.

As at today BP is at 115/75......but I am feeling light-headed. Not good for my golf and tennis!

My advice is to challenge but trust the judgement of the medics until they get the right balance of meds.

I’m on bisoprolol Mylan, (one a day.) I get very tired and can catnap four times a day. Also can be unbalanced when first get on feet. Could be one of my other heart or diabetes medications. I think we should have supervised medication holidays

Hello I have a natualy low heart beat. Bisodol took it down to dangerous levels. So now I have to use it only as PIP. When I have an attack of AF. Yes I feel shocking when I have to take them. Plus they take a few hours to work. So I just sit and do nothing until AF has calmed down.

I have been offered nebivolol to replace bisoprolol. After decided to stick with bisoprolol for the time being as I thought it might be out of. The frying plan into the fire. Bisoprolol does reduce your heart and blood pressure so hope I might be able to reduce dose. Going to discuss with dr

Bisoprolol has made me feel worse than when I started taking them, I am always tired and have constant dizzy spells. Hopefully the new medication will be better. Good luck with your meds
