Coeliac disease, Heart failure and now chronic kidney disease. Help with diet needed.

Hi all,

I,m 63, I had a stent fitted after HA in Oct 2020 and I have LVSD ,mild to moderate heart failure. I have now been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease 3 (mild to moderate), I also have coeliac disease. I am becoming very anxious about the CKD because after doing a bit of research I have to watch what I eat. I am now finding it difficult to sort out a list of gluten free, heart healthy, kidney disease foods which I can eat to stop the CKD in its tracks. Heeelp! Any info about CKD 3 would be appreciated from people who have this disease.

Thank you

I have had coeliac disease for about 15 years .I have had many lapses where I did not eat gluten free.A year ago I hit rock bottom with heart failure plus and the gastroenterologist advised a strictly gluten free diet would help my heart problems .I have stopped eating even gluten free bread apart from a homemade bread and butter pudding i made occasionly and eat rice biscuits and corn thins instead. Only gluten free biscuits and almost no cake. I rarely eat out .I do not eat much meat but eat loads of stir fry veg mostly home put together and some rice noodles . I also eat quite a lot of olive oil baked vegetables. I eat fish, eggs and some cheese and milk products .I also eat quite aa lot of fruit and salads. Breakfast is always porridge oats cooked with milk. and a banana. You will need to see a dietician to help you sort out a kidney suitable diet.Definitely keep off gluten.

Hi there

Thank you for your reply. I was diagnosed with coeliac disease 22 years ago. There is loads of stuff these days which is GF, I also make my own foods.

My concern is how I am going to fit a GF diet in with a CKD diet and heart healthy food. It doesn,t seem to leave me with much to eat. Thankfully I still have a healthy apetite but Iknow nothing about phosphorus and potassium free foods. 😬

I do think a hospital dietician is your best bet and they should see you urgently .Perhaps go through your GP and ask him for an urgent referal .

Hi againI,ve got a tel appt booked for next week. I haven,t seen my GP face to face for a long time, not since well before my HA and stent fitting.🤷🏻‍♀️ It seems they only do tel appts nowadays whatever the problem is serious or not!

Maybe have a look at couch grass taken as a tea, it's meant to be beneficial for kidney problems xMy son is coeliac, so feel your frustration in finding a suitable diet for both x

Ask to be referred to a dietician to help you with this. Meanwhile eat fresh fruit and

Vegetables and all home made things so you know what is in them eat fish a couple of

times a week - not fish and chips unless it is a rare treat. Eat less fats and sugars and meat in moderation mainly white meat.

Hi Desanthony

Yes this is very good advice.

Thank you

It might be worth having a look at some of Michael Moseley's recipes..

I also have CKD stage 3, my cardiologist explained that this is partly due to my medication but it appears to be an acceptable reaction. Better to keep up the meds and control the HF.

Hi taliesin1411

Really? So we have to choose between treating HF with meds that only make us feel awful but also cause kidney disease! Good heavens that is a difficult choice to have to make.

Thank you for the info
