Enalapril and nightmares

Hi all

Well I took my 1st enalapril (low dose) yesterday evening (for LVSD) and all seems ok but I had a scary dream, I can,t remember the details today, but then I hardly ever remember my dreams. Might this be a side effect, has anyone else suffered nightmares on this drug? I had to stop Ramipril due to severe breathlessness.

Hey Gigi1958 ; firstly I’m sorry to hear about your awful nightmares.I’m not sure if the two are related in any way but my dad was started on bisoprolol (low dose) for his LVSD and he is also experiencing terrible nightmares which he has no recollection of in the morning. 😢

I spoke to the heart failure specialist last week who said that some HF drugs have a side effect of sleep disturbances.

I hope you get some undisturbed sleep soon!

HiI have been on bisoprolol for 15mths but never had a bad dream, but fatigue, hair thinning and weight gain have affected me. I have recently cut them down to 1.25mg a day. Therefore it must be the Enalapril , I,ll stick with them for a while to see if it settles.

Rhank you for your reply

I am on bisoprolol and I too experience vivid dreams of which some are nightmares. Thankfully they are not every night though when nightmares they are not pleasant and can be unsettling on waking. I too feel it is tablets that contribute. On waking from dreams/nightmares I usually find I am very overheated too.

HiI haven,t had any bad dreams in 15 mths of taking bisoprolol. I will see if it settles and continue with the enalapril for a couple of weeks.

Thank you

Hi Gigi, I take both Ramiprilil and Bisoprolol. I have vivid, unpleasant nightmares. They became less frequent when I reduced my dose of Bisoprolol (having checked with the cardiologist). I was initially breathless, but when I reduced the Bisoprolol, my heart rate went up slightly, but my breathlessness reduced. I hope that helps. Talk to the doctor before doing anything about changing dosages, however,

Hi Eve11

It is Enalapril I was asking re; nightmares, I couldn,t tolerate Ramipril any longer so my cardiologist changed it. I have been on Bisoprolol 2.5mg for 15 mths ,recently reduced to 1.25mg because of awful fatigue, low b/p and heart rate, but never had any bad dreams with Ramipril nor Bisoprolol. I,m seem to be having a dry cough and nausea with Enalapril , but I,ve only been taking it for 2 days so I will give it a while yet to see if it settles down as the heart pain has reduced already.

Thank you for your reply.

Hi Gigi1958 I was given enalapril in 2005 and stayed on it successfully for 10 years. At this point I moved and changed to a new doctor who decided to change my medication. After five years of various tablets, all of which I had problems with I had another change of doctor and was put back on enalapril . I had a few initial sleep problems which included nightmares but they stopped after a couple of weeks. Hope the same happens for you.
