Depression

Hi everyone, I started ramipril a few days ago. Everything is going great with lowering the bp although it’s still not quite normal but so much better then it was, however today woke up feeling so depressed. Looked at the side effects and yep there it is. Just wondered if anyone else had this and how long it lasts?

Thank you

Hi Bluebell, I have been on Ramipril since HA May 20. No depression with it. The chat is usually quite responsive so I assume no one reading you questions has had that reaction hence not replied. Sorry. Hope the depression is very short lived.

Hi Muppet7, thank you for your reply. It is one of the less reported side effects, think it was 1 in 100. But still not rare. Hopefully it’ll be short lived.

Hi Chris1001, thank you so much for your reply. So far it’s not too bothersome, just lack of energy and enthusiasm and feeling really flat mood wise. I usually go out for daily walks as been advised by cardiologist to keep up the regular power walks but haven’t even wanted to step out the door. I may just have to give myself a bit of time to see if this alleviates. 😊

Hi Bluebell, yes I am on ramipril now for 10 yrs and it has worsened my depression which I always suffered a bit from. Recently had my dose increased and it is markably worse. I am hoping that I will get used to the higher dose and level off a bit. Do not just stay put and wait for it to ease as depression thrives on inactivity. Go for your walks, try relaxation techniques and if essential ask your GP for an appropriate anti depressant to lift your mood. Best of luck.

Hi Wischo, thank you for your reply. I am planning on going for my daily walk in a few moments. I believe in helping myself with being close to nature and exercising (although walking is the only thing I do now) Hopefully once I’ve got out it’ll help 😊😊

Hi Bluebell, I was given Ramipril after a HA and I didn't know until I met a chemist socially much later that it was the Ramipril that was making me cough so much. I got the doc to change it. I now take Losartan with no side effects. The doc said there are various alternative drugs. So my advice is, stick with the Ramipril for a time and if there's no improvement, ask your GP to change it. I didn't get depression at any time.

Hi RegularWalker, thank you for your reply. I know when starting new meds that did effects can often be short lived so I’m going to give it a fortnight with this low mood and see what happens. Managed to push myself and got out for my daily walk yesterday and managed a good hour out which helped. It might be a case of just pushing through this 😊

I had been on Ramipril since Jan 2017 until about a month ago but have also been on Anxiety Medication since before then but I didn't notice any depression after started taking Ramipril. Perhaps have a conversation with your Medical team, could it have been brought on because of your health issues in general or could it be the medication? Worth a conversation rather than just accepting it. Either way I do hope that it doesn't last long.

Hi Snackjack, thank you for your reply. In answer to your I’m really not sure. I’m not worried about my health as this came as no surprise with both parents having died of heart attacks. Heart disease and high blood pressure does run in the family. I feel calm about it, it is what it is. So I don’t know if it’s some underlying worries I’m not consciously aware of or if it is a response to the medication

My older brother is also suffering from Depression, after several months and not managing to get an appointment, during this time his GP has tried 4 different medications and he has had a bad reatcion to all of them he has been waiting quite a while to be able to see someone in Mental Health and finally has an appointment next week. Knowing what he is going through I do hope that for you it is just the medication and that your Medical team can help with perhaps different medication if your depression continues. Best wishes. xx

I’m sorry to hear of your bothers struggles. Trying to access mental health is a nightmare, even more so since the pandemic hit. I wish him all the best. I shall be keeping an eye on the mood and if it’s showing no signs of easing within the next couple of weeks I’ll see my doctor
