Hello,
Could I possibly eat liver twice a month without compromising my recovery?
Had a triple bypass this year and really watching my diet but I did use to love liver / heart / kidney (in a curry though not pan fried etc)...

Hello
I always remember liver been good for you and we were encouraged to eat it as it was full of iron and when you were expecting a baby you were even more encouraged to include it on your diet yet not many people liked it
I am not sure about the answer others will be but I do know my Rehab nurse has told me like things like Beef which we should not have loads of is ok say once a month , I think everything in moderation is ok but I would wait and see what the more knowledgeable members on here reply
I do hope they say yes now and again because something we enjoy can be a treat which we need now and again x
A lean cut of beef is less than 5% saturated fat. Oily fish like mackerel is about 7% saturated fat or more. Official advice is to avoid red meat but eat oily fish once a week. Then look at the advice around nuts and the studies about how they help heart health and see how high they are in saturated fat.
When you look into it, you have to start questioning the advice we are being given.
Liver is the most nutrient dense food on the planet and I try to make sure I eat a fair portion at least once a week. I eat lamb, beef and cod livers.
A few caveats:
Liver is very high in cholesterol. If you're in the camp that still believes cholesterol is harmful then you may not wish to eat it.
Liver is very high in vitamin A. Studies show vitamin A is toxic in high doses, however this has only been proven using synthetic vitamin A.
I was anemic after my bypass and asked my doctors about liver. They did not have an issue as traditional breakfast products are far worse. The only recommendation was to limit it to about twice a month. Combined with spinach two to three times a week my iron levels returned to normal.
Post amputation where I lost more blood and had more transfusions I was put on iron tablets the side effects of which I am still suffering.
My advice would be enjoy but not to often.
I eat liver in moderation, but I also eat a Mediterranean diet with a low carb bias and take a 40mg statin each day. My lipid/cholesterol scores are pretty good, well into the "normal" zone and significantly lower than they were before my bypass operation.
We're all different but that's one data point that suggests liver is not incompatible with a healthy life style.
Good luck!
Thanks all
