Angiogram worry

My husband needs an angiogram as he has had two heart attacks within 3 months. The 2nd was only a small one! He had cardiac arrest nearly 5 years ago which left him with severe hypoxia ! He has been managed on meds! Bypass not suitable as further brain damage may occur! The time has come for intervention! I am worried he will not be able to keep still! Would they give general anaesthetic?

I know you can be given sedation during an angiogram. I guess the Cardiologist will have to decide how much is safe. Have you told the hospital of your worries ?

I had an angiogram 2 months ago, and 2 angioplasties a year ago. They are done in a Cath lab. It's not an operating theatre and they don't anethsatise you I believe you can have some form of sedation if you are worried.

Woohoo I love the sedation in the cath lab. I have been in there about five times now.

I ask the nurses can I have my usual triple G&T please and can I put a pre-order in for next time 😂😂😂😂

Amazing place. I love to watch the monitors.

I take a nice sandwich for lunch and a few sweets. Have a lovely few hours rest and reading and back home for a lovely evening meal.

I know not everyone has the same experience but that was mine.

Best of luck 👍

Hello :-)

If he asks they will , I did and they did :-)

I know they sounds daunting but they can save your life so tell him to speak up so they can get it done and get to the bottom of what is going of

The Nurses will be excellent with him as well and make sure he stays still :-) x

Let us know how it goes and I suffer with the worst anxiety so tell him if I managed to stay still and go ahead with it then I know he can , it really is not bad at all I think our imaginations get the better of us because of the unknown

Good Luck and look forward to hearing how it went :-) x

I was already in hospital had the sedation wonderful stuff, being in the cath lab is like being on the deck of the Star Ship Enterprise, lots of TV monitors, because I was in hospital and saw my cardiologist every day, he was very talkative so I got a running commentary, didn’t understand a word but I was in such a happy place he could have said I am now going to take your head off and I would have thought what a great idea😂When I got back to the ward it was visiting and my husband was there, he said I was telling him I was on the ceiling and he needed to pull me back down 😂

He will be fine the nurses are great do a wonderful job of holding your hand and being reassuring, they obviously watch you like hawks to make sure we are safe.

Remember Angiogram is the gold standard and they are able to see just what is going on.

Best wishes Pauline

I agree; the nurses are fantastic and the sedation is enough to keep you still. They couldn't do it if you moved . I didn't even get to look at the monitors and I asked specifically. Disappointed. I got tea and toast afterwards.

I had an angiogram and stent last March and watched it on a tv screen. Very interesting. They offered me sedation if I wanted it. If they think the patient is going to be nervous they’ll sedate them just to make the job go more easily.

I had 2 angiogram/angioplasties and had sedation both times, even got a top up when asked. The only discomfort was in my wrist afterwards when they use a special compression device for a couple of hours while the artery heals.

He can have a sedative if he is worried. I had some when I was fitted with 3 stents and boy, it’s good stuff. You can feel it washing over your body and a feeling of calmness. I’m a huuuuuuge wuss when it comes to needles but had my eyes glued to the screens so I could see what was going on. One minute the surgeon said right we will start in a moment and you might feel a warm sensation as we insert the tube, the next he said right we are in your heart. Hardly felt anything and was not at all worried about it. They went in via my wrist as that is an option. The whole thing took about an hour from going in to coming back out.

Hope all goes well and would tell him not to worry.

Thanks so much for this 👍🏻

I had an angiogram and as others say the sedation works a treat. I didn’t ask for it but they could see that I was anxious I think.

I remember going into the “Space Ship Enterprise “ and being introduced to the team. They all told me what their job was at at which stage they would be doing it. The teamwork was so impressive. Such a shame I cannot remember anything about it 😆 So, they didn’t have to ask me to keep still.

I woke up in my room! Even there they monitor you constantly and the door never closes. This was NHS Leeds LGI mid pandemic. My heroes.

It is such an important part of heart investigation and gives the surgeon and cardiac team the bigger picture of your heat problems.

Best wishes to you and your husband.

Had two stents fitted last November absolutely amazing you are awake but you can't feel a thing anyway. It's just a shame where I was the monitor was out of view because the camera was right up close to my chest but when I sat up they showed me what they had done and why. There is no worry I'm sure your husband will be fine.

I asked to change channels in the cath lab as I was missing Emmerdale!! They do actually use a strap to keep your arm still. Reassure him nothing to worry about.

I had one at the end of March this year I arrived at Basildon hospital at 7am and it was all over before 8am, when they did it I didn’t feel a thing, I lay Ed down and the next thing they said was that’s that all done, they went in through my wrist, with a 3mm cut, I had to sit on the ward until 12.30 just to make sure all was good. Tell him not to worry he will be fine.

I am also a wuss, and suffer with anxiety. I had not slept well the previous night, so decided to just try and relax. I was aware of what was going on, but kept my eyes closed and relaxed. It was all over quite quickly. Best wishes for your husband.

I had heavy sedation. I couldn't have moved if I'd wanted to. Tell the hospital of your worries. Sedation is safer than anaesthetic.

Trust me, when they say "you need to be really still now because I have a wire in your heart", he will stay still! I certainly did.

Hi I had to have a second angiogram after a second heart attack The first angiogram was terrible and so for the second I was given a mild sedative ? Whatever it was worked I was completely relaxed but obviously still awake and the lab staff played music by the bay city rollers from an iPhone !!

ask now do not leave it till the last minute (and the worry ) I had this procedure and not being very brave told the operators, how worried I was and to treat me as if they were on the table instead of me, i would observe their performance in assuring me all was well and give them points !!!! WELL you have to speak up for yourself, I know they had a good look at my notes to see who I was in my working life. Retired hospital nursing sister ( medical )

Yes you certainly do!!! Thankyou we will 👍🏻

I was given Fentanyl and the effect was that I knew what was going on but I didn't care. I wasn't asked if I wanted it, I think it's standard practice. They can't have patients being anxious as it would affect the procedure.
